I have searching for suitable embark locations for a replica of Neuschwanstein, built to the floorplan of the actual castle. Will update as the work commences.
Attempt one:
EDIT: The original Neuschwanstein was titled Neu Burg Hohenshwangau, which translates to New Town High-swan Place. There is no way DF can handle that title, so I am calling it "Newstone, the High Birds" (Irlam Erlinlanlar)
EDIT2: No underground crops, I'll use only above ground seeds and construct above ground farms or greenhouses.
EDIT3: I have begun excavation of an underground quarry and churning out blocks of dolomite and Talc, both white stones necessary for the castle walls. I'll likely dig deeper for a grey stone for the foundations.
Any suggestions for above ground megaconstructions with little to no underground complex?
EDIT4: The floorplan calls for a slight slant in the walls at the gatehouse, but DF cannot do only a slight slant. It's 45º or nothing baby. So I am building it without the slant, seeing as it is so negligible.
EDIT5: The first level of the foundation is about 1/4 done, and the underground plumbing is now full of water. I've begun to dig for more diorite and have had 2 fair sized migrations. All dwarves drafted to the masonry team. Furthermore, I believe that the castle will be roofed in Cobaltite or Microcline. If Kimberlite is discovered that will be the stone of choice.
EDIT6: It is beginning to occur to me that this is a monumental task! Megalithic even! Still, I push on. The first floor of the foundation (which needs be some 4 floors total is about 1/2 laid. I will build the gate house first , followed by the ramps up the the fourth foundation floor. No screens yet, I'll wait until the foundation is laid for that.
EDIT 2.0: AND goblins before the chink in my wall is complete. I won't be reclaiming. I'm going to find a another site in the same area and try this again. This time, the first thing to go up is going to be the palisade and some crude surface shelters. I will include screens as soon as I find the site.
EDIT 2.1: Found copious Cobaltite, have started the foundations very nicely. The Gatehouse will be up by tomorrow, I think. Hopefully. Since the foundation will be 2 stories for the gatehouse, 4 stories for the courtyard and keep, it might take some time. Luckily the keep and courtyard are much thinner than the gatehouse and court. All relevent data for the building of this project comes from this site. Warning, awesome Lego guy is awesome.

Item of note: This embark location has magnetite and limestone and marble. However, it does not have cinnabar, which I need to wall the face of the gatehouse to give it that red colour. Instead I'll just go with the default stone of phyllite until I begin trading (when the castle is finished and defensible).
