Embark on a tundra or desert.

Yeah, in the future you probably shouldn't strike the earth quite so hard

Never done a tundra, as I tend to play warmer embarks, but that's all I used to do, play on entirely flat desert embarks, and just buy as much wood as I could.

I'm trying to diversify, though, so...

Step by step, I'll make it to a mountain embark.

Build something on the 'Murky Pool' tiles, or floor them over. I think removing those floors and buildings afterwards removes the 'Murky Pool' tiles too, and makes them normal tiles.
It does.

Actually, it makes them "Furrowed" tiles, but as this is all above ground, they eventually turn back into normal tiles.

Screw tundra, embark on a terrifying frozen ocean.

You want to get rid of the ponds? Where will your dwarves fish at? Where will they draw water from? Where will the fish live and where will the animals have their watering hole? I kind of like the natural terrain and feel like it should be preserved, otherwise I'd be right there with you on this one as far as looks are concerned. Just build your fortress around them or incorporate them into your fort :) Being eco-friendly in DF is actually a huge challenge and well-worth it in the end.

In any case, my opinions aside, you could just channel away all the land until everything is a flat area. No ponds, just flat land.

Yep, they're busy channeling away now. Too bad one of the miners died, and I had to replace him with an untrained miner, but in soil it's all about the same anyways.

Almost half done, then I'll need to bridge over my river (Scary, as it's filled to the brim with... Dun dun dunnnn... Carp!), and do the other half.
