Best Anti-virus out there
« on: January 21, 2011, 12:36:57 pm »

Ok so building up my rig but once that's done I the. Need protection from all the nasty stuff of the net so I'm looking for a decent antivirus which comes with a firewall and also does spyware.

So people what anti-virus do you recommend and why?

Wrong forum...

Anyways, I recommend PC Doctor, I haven't had a single problem since I bought it.

I can recommend Bullguard. Regular updates and if a new major version comes out, you can download that for free with no extra charge (as long as your subscription is still running though).

McAfee! It deletes stuff without asking so you don't even have to be at your computer to fight viruses! It came with a 30 day free trial on this computer and had protected me from so many things, such as Zenoclash.exe and other stuff! The best way to fight viruses is to think like them! /sarcasm

Seriously though, PC Tools Spyware Doctor is good, and the free trial actually gets rid of them, if you allow it.

COMODO Internet Security is actually quite a nice firewall/anti-virus bundle.
As for spyware, I always use Spybot Search and Destroy. It's the only damned program I trust.

Oh. Did I mention that these two programs are both free?
Did I also mention how COMODO is one of the best anti-virus companies out there? And the fact that COMODO Internet Security outperforms many, many, of the more costly anti-virus programs out there?

Microsoft Security Essentials is not so bad... free to boot.

Less annoying then the Avast reminders anyways.

Fair warning, Comodo occasionally screws with games, to the point of making them unplayable. Nothing unsolvable by turning the thing off (except in like two cases I've came across, where comodo had to be entirely uninstalled to get something to function :-\), but it happens.

Mind, it happens with other anti-virii as well, but some things have problems specifically with comodo -- or did, at least, last time I had it on this computer.

Personally, I just keep process explorer open and an eye on what should and shouldn't be running, and occasionally run something like HijackThis! or whatever free scanner I can be arsed to download. Between that and not being incredibly stupid about opening things found online (and keeping most script-running capabilities turned off on my browser, except when specifically needed), I don't have much trouble with malicious software. Only occasionally have problems, and that's nothing ripping things out of the registry won't fix :P

Is Avast 64-bit compliant yet? For awhile they were not and I switched to ClamWin.

It's been stated, but: This is in the wrong forum.

I've been checking out Microsoft Security Essentials recently, and judging from what I can find out about it, it's pretty damn good for free software. I've been using it for a few months now and haven't noticed any significant issues with it, either.

"judging from what I can find out about it, it's pretty damn good for free software"

It is extremely lousy on my computer. It finds nothing the majority of the time where even the most simplistic anti-malware can find at least 5 hits.

It also has a few other hickups.

AVIRA!
the only bad part about it is that it beeps when a virus is found. that can get annoying if you're on a virus-y computer.
