My main dining room/meeting area is just a bunch of tables and chairs packed in and occasionally I might get to adding some statues to generate happy thoughts.

Dining rooms are the most boring things to get creative with.

Dining rooms are the most boring things to get creative with.
But anyway...
At my fort that had a lot of !!FUN!! I mixed dining hall with crypt. Thoughts of how a dwarf munches his kitten tallow roast sitting near the coffin of his friend made me giggling evilly.

At the another fort, where I had a starvation period and dwarves had to catch vermin, I put there statues of dwarves terrified by roaches, rats and others. Just to remind them of that period.

And when I want to be nicer, I combine dining hall with mist generator - water falling over statues, with drainage holes covered by floor grates. Everything from gold or platinum or whatever.

I'm boring with these.  My dining room is normally 23x11, with the 22 being the horizontal dimension, smoothed, with a bunch of tables and chairs, and a well if the fort lasts that long before dying of FPS or an idea for a new fort.

Make big hall multiple Z high.
Place balconies/Cast from Obsidian.
Make pubs on balconies.
Use pubs as dining rooms.

Might put some doors in, might just make the corridor a kind of antechamber to the main dining room.

Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

I love having galleries running alongside my multi-z dining room that over look the tables and pillars.

I made an enormous ale-house style dining room area. I intend for my entire fortress to center around it.

A square with tables, chairs, some levers and a cage with all my forts animal resources packed in it.  Sometimes it has a mist generator and it always has a dorfwash out front.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
the cage on level 1 is also 3m db, made from adamantine, and filled with baby wolves, baby cougars, baby jaguars, and baby leopards.

the level above.  The ceiling is vaulted further, with a walled in chute for pitting enemies to the hydra.  The hydra pit is also made completely of clear glass.  Basically the dwarves party around the baby animals with the hydra ripping goblins apart through glass floors one level above.  and they also drink beer and watch from the sides (even though we all know constructions block sight).

to see how it lines up, the pillars on level 2 are right above the pillars on level 1.  Naturally.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

And one z-level of open space above it. Free space in the center was reserved for future waterfall, but I had to abandon before I could build it.
EDIT: Stupid me, forgot that i have screens saved and don't have to type ugly schematics.

My not-yet-implemented ideal dining room has the following features:
1) a hollow glass pillar with windows at the bottom. Prisoners are tossed down the shaft, their mangled body parts splattering against the windows while dorfs eat and learn not to care about death.

2)  In strategic locations, live goblins are trapped behind windows hidden behind closed doors. At the pull of a lever, the doors open and reveal the goblins in all of their "glory", scarying the drive to party right out of any dwarf present.

3) a pretty, comforting waterfall at the entrance rinses the dirt off anyone who enters or leaves.

4) a mud wrestling pit where soldiers spar for the entertainment of the guests. Preferably a level below so the rooms don't overlap.

Chairs and tables are all marked as restricted traffic areas and all other tiles are designated as a meeting area. I'd rather my dwarves don't stand on the tables.
