Perpetual wave machine!

Waves everywhere! (save game!)

What I have is a small area of mined out twisty tunnels. I thought I'd flood the place just to get some tower caps growing and hooked up an aqueduct system over the chasm, let it flood, then drained it. The water drained out except for the leading edge of the water, which kept going around and around in those tunnels, forever!

"Dwarves are engineering experts.  This isn't a bug."

Alternately, "A wizard did it."

No, no, I've seen this too.  It's a bug related to how doors and floodgates cut off flows.  You get this kind of Life thing going -- I had lava wave pulses going over the outside and weird patterns jumping between my (Fuzzpilz's) rooms.  Very strange stuff.

Any way to stop this once it gets started? I just ran into it myself, and it's been a while since I saved

Toady's mentioning of the game Life makes me think of an idea: You could try to set up OTHER waves to disrupt the perpetual wave agents...

Or maybe you could try connecting the channels up to the chasm?

I don't think it's possible to stop it, although you might be able to contain in depending on how far it has spread.

I've done this too, and destroyed the world in the process.

I now have plans to build a controllable version using lava. The Lava Wave Cannon!

Is there a utility that can fix this?  I would rather not abandon a fortress because of a bug.  I can't just build around the problem area and live with it because its causing everything to move much slower.  Would rewalling the entire area with granite.exe solve this? or is there an easier way?  Or is there no way at all?

If you have a permamagmawave in a very small area, it may clear up in short order. Try graniteing all the the unflooded squares.
Note that if you floor.exe a wall tile adjacient to a flood instead of mining it, it does not release the flood, so if you can get rid of all the waves and make all the parts either fully flooded or fully unflooded, then remove the walls, you could try flooding the area with magma, waiting for the magma to finish flooding it, and unflood the area.

If you turn temperature off, the magma will not harm anything, but will prevent a dwarf in it from carrying out any tasks.

I'll give the lava thing a try because it is the only suggestion that isn't cheating.  Although this is going to take a long time, since at present farthest I dug is halfway between the chasm and magma, and the flooded area is at the main cave entrance (which is north of where the wagons were).

It isn't cheating if it's used to kill a bug. :P

Oops, forgot to ask if it was a water flood or a magma flood.

If water, just flood the area with magma. It will boil all the water, and when you turn the magma off, the area will be fine.

Never mind, the problem went away by itself after a while.

Oh well, I'll tell the dwarves to carry on with the lava defense project anyway.

Was the area small? There is a small chance that a permawave will go away after enough random movement. It is tiny enough to be unexpected in a large area, but large enough to be expected in something like a 5x5.

Oh, an easy way to avoid this kind of thing happening is to wait until the area is completely flooded before closing the floodgates.  That way there is no wave of liquid still spreading through the room.
