i was reading an article regarding nethack, and it mentioned DF as a similar game to try out.

A friend told me about it.  His first comment was that he flooded his fort on accident.  When I first tried the game, I didn't think much of it because I didn't have a clue what was going on and didn't understand all the crazy symbols.  So I ignored it for about a month.  Then he reminded me of it and I decided to give it another shot while pestering him with questions on what to do.  Much joy.

also, word of mouth from a friend.  i dont think he stayed with it, but he did spark the initial interest.  after that, DF had a great deal of popularity on the Space Empires community.

I saw it when someone made a post about it on 4chan's video games board.

Watching some guys fortress get flooded was pretty funny so i decided to check it out.

I knew about it before from various sources but i wasnt curious till i saw the screenies.

I heard about Dwarf Fortress from a thread on Metafilter about good quality free time-wasters/games. I downloaded it and decided to check it out. Ten hours later I had started to scale the steep learning curve and flooded the world a total of five times. I still have all the old saves and like to revisit them and see just how poorly planned my fortresses were.

A friend of mine sent me a link here. Sadly, he himself hasn't really tried the game yet due to the learning curve even though we both enjoy roguelikes.

Oh and I've never flooded a fort.

my neighbor upstairs in my supercool apt complex was playing it and started talking to me about it
so i had to see it and then i had to get it then i had to play it all week then we had to start a bloodline now we are just waiting for the next release

A friend of mine showed me DF and I was like...   "That looks weird" so I didn't think much about it. Then I tried it and I've been hooked ever since!

Sometime last October I was bored with all the games I owned, so I went searching the web for something free. Got lucky, I guess.

Funny... First time I flooded the world, considering that I started playing in October, was about a week ago. Forgot to lock a couple of doors leading through my farm to my food stockpile :O
