The problem with filling the queue with all suspended and 1 on repeat or full of same job all on repeat is if that repeat job fails, it doesn't just stay there and try again at a later time, it clears out and frees up space for the manager jobs.

Trying to plug the queues is not an acceptable solution. We need to be able to control where manager jobs go for it to be worth using on a regular basis.

Another workaround is to order the deconstruction of the workshop to render it unable to take jobs, then forbid the workshop to stop anyone actually deconstructing it. If you make your workshops out of one item only (I prefer lead bars, what else am I going to do with the stuff?), then you can, rather clunkily, see what's in use by checking the stocks menu.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

That workaround leaves the workshop completely useless for the duration of the manager runs, and is rather a lot of work.

I don't want my normal glass furnaces clogged with jobs from my 1000 glass block greenhouse project the magma smelters should be getting, normals are for sand collecting.

one other thing i would like to see is for autojobs not distribute all their jobs immediately and clog up the queue of the workshops.  i would like vacant workshops to query and pickup jobs from the job manager instead.

I think this is a pretty good idea, especially since I have been arguing for ways in which automation can help improve management of the fortress in the past against people who argue that they want to retain micromanagement control.  Having a "I want to micromanage this one shop, but automate the rest" button would do a great deal to help with the problems of more advanced automatic control.

Once again, not a good workaround. If you ever run out of bags those jobs will drop, and you're back to square one.

The basic, easy way is to just add a toggle in the workshop's (P)rofile. The best way is to add a toggle to each layer of the (a) menu of a workshop, so you can turn automation on/off at different levels.

Actually, while we're at it, maybe some sort of global option to set whether new workshops are going to be automated or under manual override.

That way, you can set it to manual early on, when you want to micromanage everything, then switch it when you hit the point of about 40 dwarves or so, and want to exercise more generalized control of the system.  The old workshops would still be set to manual for specific directives, but everything else would be automatically set for automatic control.

How about a simple toggle setting on all workshops to determine whether auto-jobs and manager queue jobs spawn in a workshop.

I'm just starting to use the job manager feature as well after a month or so of playing and that's one of my chief complaints.  I'd love to have a toggle setting on the workshop that says "manual only" or "no automation".

Specific use case:  I have 5 craft workshops.  Two of them I keep on "make stonecrafts /R".  I don't want my stonecraft slaves to go off-task at all while I'm making 50 bone bolt jobs.  If there was such a toggle, I would set two of the five workshops as "manual" and leave the other three as "automatic".

Another variation on this topic:

Detailed workshop profile, where we can choose what materials, and what items are permittet in this workshop. Everything would be enabled by default. This would be helpful for Craft Dwarf Workshops for example, where some mould make mugs, some bone bolts, and some strand extraction. Strange mood would override any such settings. Manager would respect these profiles.
