Unofficial List of Stupidly Overpowered Game-breaking Things
« on: January 20, 2011, 09:25:56 pm »

I love this game. But it's too easy to cheese. List things that make the game so easy that it's boring.

1) Magma

Cost: a season of digging
Reward: Infinite fuel and insta-gib trap material

After the first time I used magma, it became impossible to play without. Where's the risk/reward ratio? Unlimited fuel is game-breaking. Magma forges and smelters need some kind of downside.

2) Walls

Cost: 1 rock
Reward: Invincibility

What's that, you 894838 goblin siegers? I can't hear you from behind this impenetrable 1-tile wall of sand.

3) HFS Metal

Cost: Digging
Reward: Ridiculous value and army strength

Wow, the best weapon material! :)
...And the best armor material...!..? ???
...And the most valuable crafting material..?    :(
...And you can make clothes out of it?  :-[

I must say I completely avoid the metal for balance reasons, but walls and magma I sadly can't do without.

4) Throwing (Adventure)

Cost: Press G
Reward: The flying pigtail fiber bag hits the goblin in the eye, crushing the skull and tearing the brain!

Need I say more?

What stupidly overpowered things are on your list? Are you dwarf enough to avoid them?

5) Danger room

Space taken up: variable
Cost: 1-10 wooden training spears and 2 mechanisms per tile, 1 extra mechanism
Reward: Ability to train soldiers to legendary in a season.

Also, HFS metal comes with the risk of breaching HFS, so it stands to reason it would be worth it.

5) Atom Smashing/quantum garbage dump. No need to manage stockpiles.

6) Crossbows, when they were still functional machine guns.

7) Elephants

8) Cage Traps. Bronze colossus can not only fit in a 1x1 hallway made for the height of a dwarf, but can be confined indefinitely inside a cage that can fit inside the same hallway.

Doh... Can't believe I forgot to include cages and danger rooms.

...and for the record, the next # should be 10, not 9.

10. Igneous intrusive layers.  Just about every precious metal can be found in diorite, gabbro, and granite combined, reducing trading to a footnote.

11. Large, steel serrated discs.  They carve enemies like turducken and they sell for far, far too much money.

12. Z-levels.  Entire strategies on optimal space use and absolute annihilation of enemies depend on them.

13. Cave-ins.  Combined with cage traps, they can turn anything into a zoo centerpiece.

104) high value food.  1 stack is almost like a masterwork HFS weapon -- yet it has nearly no worth to the player

15) Water wheel + screw pump "generator"
Cost: Takes up a 5x6x2 space in the fort, requires 6 logs, a pipe, a screw, and a block to build.
Reward: 190 free power for whatever the hell you want.

16) Supports linked to levers
Cost: 1 piece of rock, metal, or wood. 3 mechanisms.
Reward: The ability to trigger an aquifer-breaching insta-kill cave-in of any size you can put together, with absolutely no risk to your dwarves whatsoever.

I like stupidly overpowered things, for the record. I hope Toady never implements realistic cave-ins.

Mostly it's just gold.

13. Cave-ins.  Combined with cage traps, they can turn anything into a zoo centerpiece.

Forgotten beast says hi. And then gets caught in a cage trap by a GCS web.

17. Waterfall generators.

Cost: Two pumps and (in most places) a windmill
Reward: Never have to worry about tantrum spirals again!

Enjoyment: Infinite

19. Picks.

Think about it. A single copper pick can keep digging any kind of stone indefinatly, no matter how hard it is, with only two exceptions. It can dig out an enormously large underground city, as long as somebody is there to swing it. You can dig a simple moat and keep invaders at bay. It will never break or bend, and can only be destroyed by high temperatures. It can even serve as decent weapon!

Two stones? (EDIT: Oh, you count SMR)

And picks can be destroyed by magma (as you said, heat), atomsmashers, raw fiddling (reducing the metal's boiling point to below room temperature) and they can be stolen.

That reminds me:

21: Drawbridges.

Cost: 1-26 building materials, 3 mechanisms
Reward: Place non-megabeast, non-procedurally-generated problem under raised bridge, lower bridge to remove problem. Useful in mass culling of useless idiots.

170 power. Waterwheels require 10 power of their own, and thus output a net power of 90.

22: Aquifers.
Cost: Typically 2-5 dwarf lives,
Returns: Infinite water, infinite drainage, all easily accessible with a single miner.
