Long swords?
« on: January 20, 2011, 02:19:00 am »

My current embark has no flux, but I have lots of copper and tin available. Iron armour and bronze weapons for everyone.

However, I bought a bronze long sword from human merchants, and gave it to a mil dwarf who picked it up at first try and has used it since. Looking at the weapon stats (from wiki) and comparing them to short sword, there dont seem to be any drawbacks vs. a short sword, other than size.

The question is, what does the weight do? Could weak enough dwarves refuse to use the long sword and other bigger(\heavier) weapons? Is there any reason to rather use a short sword?

Apparently no.

I'll buy more.

If you have a good weaponsmith, and plenty of metal, it's generally better to make your own weapons for the quality you can produce.  That said, foreign weapons are often quite bad-ass.

I have bought flux and steel to get pretty decent equipment for the 16 legendaries I somehow managed to train without a danger room, but the 30-ish 50% train 50% hauling cannon fodder force is going to receive some experimental weapons.

Does the maul use mace or hammer skill?

I think mauls are too large for dwarves to wield, and that long swords require both hands.

Yep, my captain has the sword in left hand, shield in right. All fine.

edit: looks like the skill used is hammer.

You're talking about adventure mode, where the rules are different.

Maybe he's a particularly large dwarf? Size differences can matter there.

Shouldn't they be able to wield those weapons regardless of size, and at most get a penalty when they are too large relative to their size (and possibly strength)?

She. Dunno... There are some mauls laying around outside, once I've taken care of the 10 latest customers partying with a sole human caravan escort pikeman(he has so far wounded 4, killed 2 and router 2 ambushes, alone, once/if he dies I'm going to get his equipment, too), I will try and see if other dwarves will pick them up. I have one who just grew up to be an adult, and some other weaklings.

Penalty, penalty in using the weapon or just moving speed?

I've been told that there is a penalty in hit probability when using an oversized weapon, but I have little experience with that myself.

larger weapons are indeed less likely to hit the same object. Try a small sword and a long sword in the arena, the short sword usually would get at least a better to-hit rank on eyes, noses and the like.

long sword require both hands to use, unless you give it to some huge size dwarfs.
