are zombies and titans bugged?
« on: January 19, 2011, 11:58:41 pm »

Are some monsters supposed to die after sustaining only light damage? So far most of the zombies I've encountered have literally vanished after one or two hits, and they didn't even count as kills. Same goes for some titans: the ones made of snow, water and possibly similar materials have all died after one hit.

Thus I'm asking: have they been nerfed after first being too hard, or am I missing something?

They've both been nerfed, with good reason, though they're not going to stay that way.

Undead in early .31 releases could literally take months to beat because you'd literally need to hit it until it would fell apart. Toady changed it so they have a hit point system and will just evaporate after taking to much damage, and that's how it will be until their existence makes more sense gameplay-wise.

Titans, forgotten beasts, and demons made of fluid material used to be invincible to everything but freezing, encasing in cooling magma, and cave-ins because attacks just phased through them, so Toady altered it so cumulative attacks will make them lose those parts (well maybe not demons, but definitely the first two). Obviously, it's too easy now, but I'm sure Toady isn't just going to let it stay this way permanently.

If I can somewhat reliably one-shot them with an unmodded adventurer then their number of hitpoints is seriously too low. Also, I don't understand why he had to use hitpoints on zombies: I mean, shouldn't decapitating them or something work? Or was that previously broken in that body parts would simply "refuse" to fall off?

Zombies were always pretty easy but skeletal things (e.g. whales, giant cave spiders) were damn well near immortal.  Forgotten beasts that were made of water or clay or something similar were near immortal, and ones that lacked a head (e.g. blobs) were straight up immortal (not counting cave-in)

With aimed attacks a human-controlled adventure could beat one that way, but NPC ones in dwarf mode (especially before aimed attacks) could attack one dozens of times without causing injury.
