Because sometimes, in the life of a dwarf, you want to get out there and kick some ass. But then sometimes, you just want to sit in the caverns below the fort and watch the water drip from the roof, and forget that next winter the goblins will be back to ambush you again.

I imagine this playing whenever my dwarves embark in a haunted area.  Needless to say they are VERY happy when the traps are constructed and migrants arrive...I don't think anyone in the real world could found settlements in these places.
