Protection of an Aluminum Breastplate
« on: January 19, 2011, 06:51:12 pm »

So I just got an Armorsmith make an Aluminum Breastplate in a mood. Does anyone know how it's protection would fare compared to my usual Steel breastplates?

Not very well.

The protection wouldn't be very good, but it's light and I'd guess better than leather, at least. Give it to your best marksdwarf.

DF aluminum is far from real-life aluminum alloys, just like DF iron is inferior to DF steel.

I looked at the raws, and aluminum is weaker than copper, and even silver. It is light, yes, but simply cannot compare to steel for armors.

The protection is... light. About as light as aluminium itself.
To the marksdwarves it goes.

I set up several bouts in the Testing Area to test this.

Aluminum armor seems relatively effective against wooden weapons, but a Skilled Swordsdwarf with a copper short sword is able to stab a Skilled Swordsgoblin through aluminum armor.

So, it's better than clothes and maybe leather, but is useless in melee against anything but elves.

kind of a pointless test, don't you think?

I'm just imagining a drunken armorsmith soldering together a bunch of crushed pepsi cans and calling it 'armor.'

I just got a Rose Gold high boot too...  :'(

Even a sock would probably work better.

Since it's masterwork, it may have a certain ability to turn away attacks.  It would certainly be best in the hands of marksdwarves though.

And the rose gold boot should be used offensively.

Also, related question, how useful is a wooden breastplate? I seem to have some after killing two Elven caravans. :o

As you can see, those didn't protect them well, so to trash compactor they go.

That's an evil, yet fun way to start a forest fire. (Assuming your in a forest of course)

As I mod almost all metals to be weapon/armor craftable, this is relevant to my interests.

Almost all. Until Toady One enables radiation NOBODY needs a lead breastplate.

For what it's worth, the lightness of aluminum armor probably means nothing. Weight of equipment doesn't actually seem to slow dwarves down at all.
