[38c] Items wont be removed from bins
« on: March 29, 2008, 01:46:00 pm »

Ok, so I did a search, and i searched the known bugs list, but could not find this.  Apologies if this is a duplicate.  I am having the issue that once an item is placed in a bin, it can not removed except for use.   Here is how I am able to verify/found the bug.

Option 1: stone block

I created a stone block stockpile, and had many stone blocks in it (around 300).  I then created a second one at a site where I wanted to create floors, set the second one to have 0 bins, and removed the old one.  In the past the dwarves would pull the stones out of the bins, and lay them out in the new stockpile (which I could then remove, and lay floors very quickly since the stone was on the tile it would need to be).  In 38c they will no longer remove the blocks from the bins, and the only way to get them to a new stockpile is to allow bins.

Option 2:  Finished Goods

Initially I had set up a joint finished goods stockpile, it contained both clothing items and stone/shell crafts.  Later I wanted to separate these to make hauling and trading easier, since I want to sell all my crafts, but none of the clothes.   When the old stockpile was removed and two new stockpiles were created only the bins with only clothes, or only crafts were moved.  I had to move the combined bins to the trade depot, and sell off all the crafts from them.

Dwarfs will remove things from bins in order to use them (such as clothes and such) but they will not do so in order to move it to a new stockpile.

I do have multiple saves where this can be demonstrated if it is not a universal issue, this is my first game with 38c.

P.S.  If it matters, game is un-moded, but I have modified the pop cap (set to 40) and max graphical FPS (set to 10), weather and all that stuff is still on, baby making was turned down to 0 (I did so after I had 25 children but only 40 adults hehe), but this did manifest prior to that change.

Dwarfs will remove things from bins in order to use them (such as clothes and such) but they will not do so in order to move it to a new stockpile.

I believe this is something of a feature, though it is problematic.  For a workaround, you can set a stockpile with no bins to 't'ake from a stockpile with bins, and the dwarves will then take items out of the bins and move them.

That was actually one of the first things I tried, but they will not do a take from another stockpile if it means removing it from a bin either.

Also as an addition to the issue, shortly after making this post I wanted to separate my clothes into two stockpiles based on quality.  The dwarves were able to retrieve items from bins in this case in order to move them to new stockpiles based on quality.  However the previous issues with filtering based on material for crafts vs clothes, or moving stone blocks are still present.

Similar problem with seed stockpiles:

I set up a 2x1 seed stockpile for e.g. Dimple Spawn but forget to immediately forbid barrels... so I get a barrel with two bags (one seed in each).

Making another food stockpile (2x1 Dimple Spawn, no barrels) set to take from the previous stockpile has no discernible result - the barrel stays.

I'm experimenting with dumping the bags from inside the barrel (doesn't seem to work either); and/or placing the "nice clean 2x1" stockpile a long way away from the farm (so the farmers will use up the seeds from the barrel first, with some luck  :)

Oh man, that explains a lot.  How annoying.  I can't really see how that's a feature.

So that they move the bin as a unit instead of unpacking it and moving it bit by bit into another stockpile.

I guess I was confused about the taking; I'd seen it work often enough to form that belief, but they must have just happened to be using, not moving, the items.

Another workaround that I am entirely certain works: dump the items.  This is what I do for seed bags.

I had this problem with an artifact stockpile - after a mistake in forgetting to set the pile to no bins, I cannot get the fricken things out of the bin, no matter what I do. I've tried forbidding and dumping, too - no luck.

It's vexing because I wanted to place them individually in the vaults.

I spent a while trying to get two seed bags out of a barrel ...

First I tried setting the bags to "Dump". Nothing.

Then I set the barrel to "Dump". Dwarf runs up, empties the barrel, dumps it.

I'm not sure if the same thing works with bins ... I regularly dump all the empty bins from my block, cloth, leather stockpiles (but then, my dumping zone is between four craftsdwarves' workshops. Dump all the loose stones and extra bins there, un-forbid once in a while. Works much better and reliably than stone stockpiles imo)
