Ricky Gervais on Golden Gloves 2011 - U mad Hollywood?
« on: January 19, 2011, 04:48:18 pm »

While chronically unfunny and one of the worst comedians out here, in my opinion, his opening monologue was the Golden Globe awards 2011 was truly a masterful troll.

From a certain gay scientologist to anti-semitic Mel Gibson.

While poking fun at hollywood is generally expected to happen when a comedian gets a role like this, hollywood is seriously not nominating this guy after this. It was pure awesome, just look at Steve Buschemi's face.

The whole thing can be summed up like this:

Oddly, some of the jokes he told looked quite funny.  Perhaps they seem less offensive when written down.

Although he did say beforehand that he'd never be invited back, so...

Yeah well, they need to take that stick out of their ass. Yaaaaay Ricky.

I still don't find him funny most of the time. He's the man who walks into comedy, he doesn't make it happen.

I don't know, I think he's pretty funny. I saw him in a couple of movies, and my sister didn't like it. I guess it's a matter of taste.

Also, british people are funny sounding

Oh, don't get me wrong, this was hilarious and I loved the few Extras episodes I saw. It's just, he didn't make the jokes in that, he was sort of, party to them. Since he's the writer (I think?) I guess he's funny anyway. It's just, everything funny seems to happen around him.

OMIGOD, He's the British Michael Cera! Holy shit!
Spoiler: I fuckin' knew it (click to show/hide)
His delivery is gold, most of the time; which is why talented writers use him in their movies. :L

EDIT: Wait, he writes movies?

I think I read somewhere that he's a writer.

Did he write for Extras? That was what I meant, anyway.

The deadpan delivery could've also contributed.  It's good for getting laughs from a regular audience, but not great when people start taking offence at it...

And I think he's usually part of a team of writers for the shows he's in.

I just never liked The Office (american or brittish) so I'm biased. This hasn't stopped me from loving this man for what he did. I actualy regret I didn't watch the awards, usualy the monologue is just a bunch of ass patting, random comments and some clapping.

Yeah, that was great, and done in good taste in my opinion. Also, lol at Steve Buschemi scanning the crowd for the assassin (EDIT: he's judging people' reactions). He knows that what he's hearing is going to start some sick fires.

EDIT2: Also, I haven't seen that movie he talks about so I dunno.

I hate all those award shows, so I think I liked his speech on principle :P

De Niro was pretty off color too. I'm not sure if his crack at public schools was a joke or not.

That Buschemi animation is going to live in infamy, too.

Being a fan of sick jokes* I generally enjoy his stand up and enjoyed both the office and idiot abroad. Whoever hired him ought to have watched some of his stand up work as it's arguably far worse, or better, than this. I notice that he said "I warned them". What more can you expect from someone with a degree in philosophy?

*Sick jokes being the kind of joke only told between people with the express understanding that nobody involved is genuinely sick.

Edit: Turns out he has hosted the show before so perhaps my comment above is less valid. Still it turns out he warned them in advance.
