Welp, due to administrative errors I don't start my next year of Uni until September and due to the British Conservative Party, I am no longer in employment. So... Here goes nothing.
I originally got this idea from Bernard Cornwell's
Saxon series and thought, "That's a good setting for bored role players.
Loot, bloody battles, an active slave trade and the lamenting of your preferred sex. Awesome, aye?
Of course due to the imaginative nature of such people, I will give it a more fantasy-esque setting, including actual participation of the God's and the belief systems involved. (Probably a rudimentary magic system also. :/)
Setting:
You are fighting for the Danish Warbands as they conquer lands across the British Isles. Only one Saxon kingdom stands before your martial might and drink fuelled curses. Wessex.
Wessex, a land of farmers, with few trained military outside the kings personal guard, a peasant levy is recruited outside every planting and harvest season (And in times of dire need.)
To the north is Scotland, a bare and terrible land as your own Danmark, only the strong and, obviously, the mad venture into the highlands of the Scotti. To the west is the last Briton refuge, a land of valleys and grassland.
And over the Sea is the Land of the Irish Kings, a land of gold and fields, with a wanting for Saxon slaves.
Religion:
For the Norse. they strive to prove themselves worthy of the hall of the dead. Men and women strive for battle, blood and glory. The Aseir will grant blessings and abilities, you will receive a +1 bonus to faith rolls if you sacrifice possessions, fight victoriously in personal combat or strike a killing blow in their name. The Vanir on the other hand, will grant blessings and abilities, but you will get a +1 faith based bonus for proving yourself in Diplomacy, craft and non-combat skill. Neither will grant resurrection.
For the men of Christ, they worship not only Christ, but also those heralded as saints. The belif in sainthood was an overwhelmingly pagan idea which was sought to be discarded during the reformation.
As the 'lesser gods' of the Christian belief they will grant specific blessing to claimed domains. As many saints were not actually recognised by the Pope but were worshipped by villagers anyway ,you many choose your own saint to worship and his domain (if you choose to be a christian convert). May grant ressuraection.
For example 'Saint Andswaru, saint of dancing (+1 movement rolls, +1 diplomacy rolls, +1 single/dual blade combat skill.)
May grant ressuraection. but no bonuses to faith based rolls.
If you choose to be Atheist (without a patron): You may invent a starting spell of your choice and a +1 affinity with either Earth/air/water/fire/life/death.
Example Inherent abilities/spells (will grant requests):
Beserkr: Will get a +1 to hit and damage rolls, but has to roll to acquire targets (Friendlies included.)
Ambi-dexterous: May switch weapon hands for a +1 hit bonus, may dual wield for a -1 penalty to hit.
Soothing rain: Heals light wounds of every friendly on battlefield, but gives -1 penalty to dodge during preparation.
Be creative.
