It becomes VERY obvious to you later how they set up the game. When you realise how the game works it is easy to exploit it.

Though I do have a question: Are hoards based upon day or spaces captured?

Because I do know that the further from the start the more zombies that are present.

I actually believe it is zombie count. One time when I kept the zombie population down, they stopped coming. When it got up again, they came.

I'm thinking Harder and Nightmare are damn near to impossible, except in the case where you get a perfect starting square, i.e. hospital right next to you with a couple of apartments to expand so you can convert suburbs into farms.

Hmm and Zombie count is based upon distance from center so to speak (It isn't really, but it has a dividing factor)

The secret to the game as far as I am aware is that expansion is your worst enemy. Most people lose because they expand to several locations at once.

But, they NEED to expand to get more housing/food/defenses to survive the big zombie raids and the long run.  It strikes a fine balance.

It generally means, they did not spend enough time killing zombies while expanding or the RNG kicked them and said no more soldiers for you...

I got lucky my first round. I got a hospital, 2 apartments, a farm, some burbs, and a lab all surrounding my start. It was very useful. And there were 2 police stations 2 squares away.

Zombie spawn is based on squares captured. Less untaken tiles = more zombies. Also, when you get down to the last few tiles, send at least 20 men in per square. You should have a fucking epic level of doods by that point, so you have no excuse.

Yes but you would be surprised how few survivors you can get away with even on more difficult settings. It is better to take smaller risks then to take many small risks since losing survivors is a huge penelty all over.

The bulk of you army is going to be soldiers and IMO having enough farms to feed everyone much easier then providing space for them. (and boy are soldiers good...)

Especially since with though farms and a bar you essentially are in the winning spree since 100% happyness is great!

Awesome flash game, good tech demo for a full fledged game.

My strategy was always head for a border and build up from there.  It's basic area vs circumference math.  Expanding along the edge of the map increases your area with a lower circumference increase.

I had a lot of fun with this.  I finished a game on normal, then went straight for nightmare.  I promptly got my butt handed to me.   :P

Well that and one of the buildings on the outer section is very nice. (Large farms)

Fun game, I lost the first time I played but the second time I beat it and got all of the possible endgame solutions.  I tried clearing out every town tile but it's impossible, as soon as you clear it the last tile, more flood into it before you get the chance to secure it.  Even with all the different settings, it's a game that's only fun the first time you play through it.

I dunno, the difficulty levels give a fair bit of replayability. My first runthrough (on Normal, IIRC), I won handily, clearing out the portal before winning by research ("Huh, only one food tech left to research. May as well retrain the rest of my scientists..." "...oh. There's more. Well, back to school with you!").

My second playthrough, I switched over to 'Harder', and promptly got my rear handed to me... couldn't keep people happy (thanks, RNG.  >:( ), wasn't used to needing to scavenge food, couldn't amass enough soldiers. In retrospect, I probably screwed up by overexpanding - I tried to secure more bars and churches, for happiness, but of course that increased the number of zombies I had to handle. Trying to get more soldiers required more houses, and of course you need more food, which means more expanding...

It may sound odd, but if you don't scout a location you can just take it.

It is part of the many quirks I find absolutely annoying about the game... (such as that taking a tile in fact just obliterates everything inside it)

Are there any games like this one?

Sandbox management / survival strategies?
