The most important debate of our generation
« on: January 18, 2011, 09:40:15 pm »

The forums are filled with threads on important topics such as religion and politics, but when it comes to the real issue, we only beat around the bush.  So let's do it. Let's have a frank and serious discussion about one of life's most important questions:  Manual or Automatic transmission.

I prefer a manual transmission.  I like have control over how much torque I have and using engine braking.  There's also something satisfying about dropping down a gear to pass some slowpoke on the highway.  Automatic transmissions never seem to shift when I want them too, and I just feel weird driving one.

Stick all the way.
I've driven a little bit of both, and, not only do my habits automatically shift to working with the stick and clutch, even on an auto, but it really does just feel more comfortable to me.

For those of you who prefer automatic, do you prefer what little bit of stick you have to be embedded in the steering console or separate, in the middle?

Manual. I think it makes you a better driver in the end. I'd prefer if 15 year old drivers have something between them and turning a car into an easily guided cruise missile. Namely, a manual transmission.

PS-I'm addicted to the 2nd gear. There is nothing, nothing more gratifying than the power band of 2nd gear.

Automatic. Shifting interferes with my text messaging.

Yeah. How could I play WoW if I had to manually shift?

In seriousness, I don't drive, but my girlfriend prefers manual

If I had the choice I'd get a stick and learn it.

I don't drive.  :(
City slicker like me? Better if I don't drive, the traffic can get sort of bad, and the bus and train are both so nice, but personaly I'm all for automatic. Keeping things more high tec keeps programmers enployed.

In all seriousness, yeah. Automatic is more to my preference because hurtling down the interstate at 70 miles an hour or changing lanes in bumper to bumper is complicated enough. I don't have any problems driving, but adding another control surface and a whole slew of ways to screw up doesn't interest me. Now, my four wheel drive? That's something I need. Gimmie gimmie gimmie. You can take my SUV away when global warming gets rid of snow you city-dwelling hippies.

Haven't bothered getting my Learner's Permit yet, but the only car I've driven was a manual. A '70s minivan, with about fifteen degrees play in the steering before the wheels would actually turn. In the middle of woopwoop (For all of y'all Yanks and Poms, that roughly translates to 'bumfuck nowhere'), miles from a hospital. I rammed a picnic bench. Luckily we had a bullbar.
