I respect people who can dump through gears like rally racers, and it's not a bad feeling, but I'll take automatic any day.  Messing around with machinery ruins the experience, the car should be an extension of my legs and my legs don't have a transmission at all.

You can take my SUV away when global warming gets rid of snow you city-dwelling hippies.

Hey, I resent that! As a city dwelling hippy, I can assure you, we wish we had the power to take away your SUV! Nobody listens to us cafe dwelling radicalists!

Meh. As another city dwelling hippie I don't really care. I wouldn't drive an SUV in the snow though, I'd be concerned about it rolling even with four wheel drive.

As for transmission? Never driven a manual, but I think I'd probably like it. Absolutely cannot stand column-mounted shifters on an automatic though. Just feels so unnatural.

Now if you'll excuse me I gotta go smoke a joint and read some Barthes.

No using. That's not what freedom is for.

Nah.  There's a lot to be said for electric drive systems though.  The idea of vehicles powered by internal combustion driving the wheels by mechanical power transmission is a dinosaur of a technology, used because electric motors were crap in the 1890s and perpetuated by industrial tradition.  If you replaced the mechanical transmission and impeller gearbox and driveshaft and differentials and all that shit with a generator and electric motors, you save weight, tons of production and petroleum-based lubricants, and you get better power transfer with no gears to shift.  That's what I love about diesel-hybrids, they just make so much more sense.

Eating pudding with an appropriately flavored candy stick is quite nice.

Also prefer automatic, I can't even talk while driving, let alone fiddling with some mechanical thingamabob while driving.

Internal combustion engines are pretty dwarfy.  "Let's build an engine powered by explosions!"

"Lets fuel it with the liquified and distilled bodies of ancient beasts!"
