Magma rose
« on: January 17, 2011, 08:08:20 pm »

So, FD fort, dug down to magma, struck adamantine, yadda yadda yadda. And when I start digging out an area for magma smelters/forges the magma went up to my miner. She is burning. Any idea why the magma did this?

So I just started playing this game and I accidentally nuked the moon.

Because magma is hot.

Are you digging on the same z-level as the magma?  You are supposed to dig out an area above the magma and channel down.

Wait, you mean the magma spurted out of the hole you made in the floor?

That's exactly what I did. I've used magma tons before. It rose up my stairwell, and I didn't even get a chance to dig two tiles before it happened.

Stairwell?  I normally channel down using d -> h (channel) to make the hole.

Are you using a pump stack?

It went up my exploratory stairwell. I build my forts with a main central stairwell and use the same one as an exploratory stairwell. Unsafe, but it makes fort building easier.

Strange. Magma should not do that. Water pressurizes, and will do that, but magma shouldn't, unless pressurized with pumps.

My uneducated guess is that something buggy is going on with refilling behaviour. Did you drain any magma?

I've done absolutly nothing with magma. I think I heard this somewhere before.

does magma spawn above the magma sea like it used to with the old magma pipes?  or does it only spawn at the map edges and then obey normal magma flow rules?  I don't really know the answer but it may have something to do with that.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

Interesting.  Is it still rising?

No, it stopped after one z-level.

On what level did you breach the magma? Don't forget pressure.

I keep reading this thread title and thinking it's a kind of plant that grows in magma.  Which would be awesome.

To the OP:  Did the magma appear or rise on any level higher than the maximum level of previously existing magma?  Also, did you have any exposed semi-molten rock or 'magma flow' or similar tiles nearby?

There is no pressure in magma. Yet.

I thought it was an elfy/dwarfy (mostly elfy) megaproject involving carving a rose into your main hall and filling the carving with magma.

I keep interpreting it as a rose made out of magma (not approved for Valentine's Day use)
