...I decided to get back into DF. Started up a world, played with PerfectWorld and the Lazy Newb Pack for its GUI, generated world, found a nice volcano next to a major river with flux, attempted to embark, had the game just close on me three times, fourth time was a success.

Looks normal... there's the volcano, what do you mean that's a major river it looks like a brook... why is there no edge to that rock dividing the river, and why does it say it's underground? Hrmm... strange. Let's see how high it goes....

I've just passed the 2000 mark and counting. It narrowed for a while, but widened out again at 1600 or so. I have no idea what rock it is, as there are no edges to poke at.

Edit: There we go... Its muddy ground with some trees at 2243. Muddy clay with muddy Tower Caps and muddy Tunnel Tubes. Can't go any higher than that.

I think I have mutant caverns. >.>

So Ledi's been training the cats into an army of disposable warbeasts?  Why did no-one think of this sooner?!
Hellcannon seemed to be constantly on the verge of death and Levergedon before my turn helped, but ultimately what killed it was Ledi's cat army.

Upload the save, for the justice of dwarfkind.

If you can mine on this map, it might be the greatest ever. <3

I haven't tried tinkering with it at all, so this is a pristine "I've Just Started" save. Please don't mind the nicknames of the dwarves, I wanted to do something different for once. XD

If a spire made of adamantine is a hair from Armoks beard, then what is this?

Too much of a coincidence. Same thing happened, different material.

A hair from his eyebrow.

I don't mean to alarm you, but it appears that your Dwarves are all in fact elephants.

You see, here's how I think this works:
Overseer: Welcome to the military! You need to wear socks! Dorf: Oh, I should get military socks. My socks are civilian socks. Dorf discards socks Dorf: You know, I need a whole lot of gear now. I should get socks... last. Oh, but these steel boots with the white goo on them are nice!

*Loads file*

That's no pillar, it's an unrevealed area under a paper-thin floating cavern floor. You have a massive area of "underground inside dark" that is actually above ground.

EDIT: Used Reveal. There is a magma pool in cavern 3 under the black spot. Cavern 1 is missing, presumably it is in midair. "Cavern 5" is unusually tall. Everything else is normal, including the normal adamantine spires.

This is known to happen on occasion. Abandon and start again. It's the only choice.

Yeah, I'm going to go look for a new area (hopefully with a rather more 'major' major river), I just thought I'd mention it here as an...er... natural curiosity?
