utilizing these worthless bows
« on: January 16, 2011, 01:38:35 am »

I recently came onto a bunch of worthless bows. I could melt them down, I suppose, but theya re all made of copper, which I have a ton of already. So i was wondering if I could make use of them in weapon traps without using arrows. Normally a dwarf would reload bows, crossbows, and blowguns with appropriote ammo if they run out, but if there is no ammo, would they use their melee attack instead?

Probably not and you'd get a ton of annoying "Urist cancels load weapon trap: Needs ammo".

Yeah, even if they did anything, the message spam would not be worth it.

Unless you bought arrows from the elves and humans, but that's a waste of money.

I'm in the process of cleaning up, but most of the stuff is forbidden until I can get the important stuff inside first, namely a hydra corpse that showed up shortly before the siege. The hydra was slaughtered by the way. 13 some military dwarves swarmed it when it walked up like an idiot. I count 5 severed heads, 3 of which were 2 z-levels up and an additional 30 tiles away, and on top of a tower I was building.

LAGSLAYER'S HEAD

In all seriousness, that shouldn't take too long. Once your dwarves start the hydra-hauling tasks, you can go ahead and unforbid everything. Also, I'm assuming you got these bows from goblin or kobold invaders, in which case I recommend you check their quivers (if they have them) for leftover arrows.

Also, you can never have too much copper.

There is a pretty easy way to use these in weapon traps without having to have arrows.  Melt them down into copper bars and make them into axes.

Weapon traps loaded with ranged weapons only fire bolts, arrows etc rather than using their melee attack, but you shouldn't have that big an issue with job-cancellation spam; so far as I can make out, they can only accept ammunition in stacks -I think they have the same upper limit as a quiver- and they're not going to be fired all that often. If you can't or won't buy a few bundles of arrows from a caravan, trade them for something you actually need.

Never used Dwarf Therapist, mods or tilesets in all the years I've been playing.
I think Toady's confusing interface better simulates the experience of a bunch of disorganised drunken dwarves running a fort.
