I like Roleplaying, do you like Roleplaying?
« on: January 16, 2011, 01:15:57 am »

Okay, so I've been thinking about this topic for a little while.
I know quite a few people here enjoy different kinds of Roleplaying, but it seems to be a topic only spoken about briefly and on a very spesific topic.
So, here's the motherload. A topic about Roleplaying...
A topic that, here, litterally has it's own forum.
...Yeah, this is starting to sound a little crazy. And I'm noticing that, so it must be bad.

So I'm going to start with something of a roleplaying introduction I guess.

I currently run a tiny roleplaying oriented MUD that I've programed myself from the ground up.
I've not been on there as much as I want, partly because I feel things are getting repetative, and that I really can't progress my whole "taking the role of the bad guy in the first preson" thing until my GF gets back so I can have an arbitor there for it.
I also have a few other ideas rolling around in my head, but currently it's all a mess right now.

Here's a random summery of my preferences on roleplaying:
I used to like Forum roleplaying. That's died out a lot recently since I hate having to keep up with it all.
I then moved onto IRC styled Roleplaying, like my MUD is at right now.
And, just recently, I found out I actually quite like Pen and Paper too, thanks to Aqizzar.

There's a lot more that I could actually expand into right now, but I'm tired... And it can all be expaned into in later posts.

But to get us there, what about everyone else? What are your thoughts towards roleplaying?

I love roleplaying. In fact, I love it so much that I'm in three separate D&D 3.5 games on this forum that all have a game once a week or so.

I also love roleplaying, I do so in a few differnt ways. I, obviously, play RPGs, computer/console based, and pen and paper based, and internet-pen and paper based. I also RP characters when playing other games if I can. And I just do plain old RPs on forums rather than RPGs, to be honest I prefer RPs to RPGs on forums, both becouse RPGs can take awhile to update and for everyone to post and becouse I just find RPs more enjoyable.

That's actually a very interesting point there. Forum based RPs and Forum based RPGs are two very different things. Each with it's ups, each with it's downs.
Though, sometimes I feel that and RP on it's own may just grow a little bit too fluffy, since they (sometimes) run without a leader, which tends to run into an equilibrium whereby everyone's just happy and the original plot has been long since expired!
I've been in oh-too-many forum RPs that run on way past their ends.
But on the other side, my oppinion of forum RPGs is that they offer, on average, less immersion than their equivilent RPs.
Though, my points here are a tad scetchy since I haven't taken part in any such activity for a few years now.

Well, this sounds interesting!
I've never actually participated in a traditional D&D game...Unless you count single-player mainstream RPGs. *coughNeverWinterNightscough*.

I'd love to join in more Pen and Paper styled games, but unfortunately I've got so much stuff to sort out right now, that making a character sheet would just go to the back of a rather ignored "to do" list.

I love Roleplaying. But I HATE "Roll playing". Ill admit, I mostly like tabletop games because they let me actually RP. But really I wouldn't mind just RPing without a system. Hell I'd prefer that, that's what I'm in it for, not the dice.

I used to masquerade as a vampire for a while, specifically a Gangrel.

A 4th generation Gangrel that had a lot of points into Obfuscation and Protean. For those of you who don't know, Image a vampire that can hide in plain sight, and can transform into a mythological creature of his own choosing.

Ripping apart those GOD DAMN FUCKING TREMERE AND THEIR DAMN WIZARD TRICKS! Though My brother played this Tzimisce, we had lots of fun double crossing the Sabbat, the local prince, and we sometimes managed to kill werewolves.

Though in D&D I used to play a chaotic good bard, who's only goal in life was to trick paladins into committing evil acts.

Yes. Honestly, I like it more out of any game. I'd rather have a roleplaying game over a fair, balanced game every day.

Not in the geeky case where I wish I was an elven barbarian or so. More like in that I like to watch the life of an elven barbarian unfold realistically. Ironically, a lot of RP games hurt roleplaying more, just by being so game mechanics based.

I'm reltively sure no RP I've played in has 'game mechanics', RPGs? Yes, but no RP, the closest thing an RP has had to such thing is rules on how magic works in that world, which is usually only brought up if someone tries to do something completely and utterly idiotic.

I don't know, I've seen some games that when they break... They break... to the point where the "Rules" become window dressing.

Such as Exalted or Scion...

It wouldn't be so bad but it took me a bit to realise how broken the systems were. Scion probably being the worst in that the whole point was to reach Demigod and Godly status but the game breaking unrecoverably at demigod making it a waste of cash for anyone with imagination and knowledge of mythology/google.

While Whitewolfs other games are unbalanced they certainly arn't broken (Well ok, there are exceptions). The severe advantages and disadvantages you get are part of the experience and it is very tough to outright break them.

I've also seen games that are more balance then Roleplaying. They are great too with the right DM as not only do you get a lot of roleplay but great gameplay value as well. Rather underrated in the Roleplaying community. Which is a shame.

As for me, I like Roleplaying but I don't really have too many good experiences and I am getting discouraged.

Any other larper? I larp once a year in a huge even in Belgium (avatar). There is about 1000-1500 players, it's lots of fun.

I'm with Janet on this one, while I do play a lot of tabletop and PnP games, I cut and chop the rules a lot so they're less restricting on the RP'ing side of things. Your imaginations the limit, why shackle your self to soemthing when you can just make it up?

I enjoy role playing, however I don't know any Rpers in RL, WoW is devoid of them, and role playing in a interweb forum usually ends with all the action happening while I'm in bed or in school. And nobody's there when I'm online.

Also, I can't role play psychopaths.

I roleplay all the time. It's pretty much how I spend my free time nowadays. Roleplaying with other people is just NEATO! DnD is fun, forum roleplaying is fun, roleplaying on games is fun, roleplaying on roleplaying action is great to watch, etc.

Bwahaha! I know someone who's a Malkavian Primogen!
I think he has quite a few points in Obfuscation... But his dearest friend has a much higher Auspex skill.
Hehehe!
(Okay, I don't really know all too much on that subject, just thought I'd show off that I know something about it.)

Yes. Honestly, I like it more out of any game. I'd rather have a roleplaying game over a fair, balanced game every day.
Seeing as this braught up the whole balance issue...
I've found that personally, since playing Dwarf Fortress, I've started to grow a little more fond of games where the odds are actually stacked against me.
Sure I've just lost. Sure I've now got to start again... But, in the process of losing, I grew better!

--WoW is devoid of them--
This is actually painfully true. And is a partial reason as to why I quit. Blergh.
Also, I can't role play psychopaths.
That's perfectly understandable too. It's a hard role to take.
I always take a long time to think up "bad guys". Firstly because I always have to find some common ground with them, so that while I'm roleplaying as them, I can actually get behind what they want rather than just know that I'm roleplaying them to their eventual death. Secondly, I try to keep any of my other characters well away from them, because that way, my head isn't getting bogged down with conflicts of interest.

As for me, I like Roleplaying but I don't really have too many good experiences and I am getting discouraged.
I just have to point out how terrible this is. I actually feel like I should do something to help here, too.

I cut and chop the rules a lot so they're less restricting on the RP'ing side of things.
Well, that's the whole idea! ...Or at least, it should be.
Back on that subject of my MUD, I'm actually trying to work the engine to act like a DM'd pen and paper session, except that rather than rolls, the DM can and will have completely control over what happens.
Should hopefully remove the whole "grinding" aspect to the idea of levels.
