Human wagon goes *poof*

If finally built a road so the aboveworlders could come and visit. I got to see their enter map, then a second later the wagon vanished and the merchant's guards started killing the local deer population.

The goods are on the ground and my dwarves are loot the contents.

Did the wagon get blocked in any way, or was the depot/road damaged?  Wagons scuttle if they lose their path (or if they are 'killed' by monsters).  It could also be something else.

I've seen the guards attack animals that seemed to mind their own business, and then get mauled.

This lead to the merchants to haul ass outta my place... & if the guards still lived they would crawl off my map too. If not, NEW PANTS!

I did build a rough road, using the stones fresh from mining. Should I have use the rock blocks you get from the mason's shop?

If the wagons showed up, the road was fine at the point when they arrived.  It's only various abuse afterward that usually upsets the wagons.  They tend to be pretty patient if a dwarf or bodyguard gets in the way.  It could also just be a bug related to one of the wagon scuttling behaviors and nothing was wrong.
