Right so I have a corpse here...
« on: January 15, 2011, 05:27:44 pm »

We were attacked by a grizzly bear, and my dog went out and bravely defended the fortress!!!...but it died afterwards D: . Anyway, long story short, my question is how do you get rid of a corpse that's hanging around in your fortress? Does it have to be selected to be butchered or something?

Make a burial place to bury it, or make a corpse stockpile.

You can't butcher the corpses of domesticated animals, and their corpses never seem to rot to usable bones, so they're generally just useless. You can put it in a coffin if it was a pet, though that's of limited utility, or destroy it via magma, atomsmashing, or other means.

p-y is how you designate a pet dump.  There may be something better to do with puts, from either a role-play or practical sense, but this works.

they are trash.  Dump them with the trash.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

I had a similar problem with a dead dwarf in my dining room. I hauled her out to a garbage zone to eliminate the miasma, then deleted the zone and built a coffin. The corpse remains sitting out there where the zone used to be and they haven't put her in the coffin. The wiki didn't explain why this might have happened. Do I need to build the coffin first, then have a free dwarf for burial?

Did you reclaim the corpse after dumping it? Have you specified that the new coffin is to be used for burial, and that it is still free?

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

I'm sure it's the "Reclaim" issue, because the coffin clearly has her name on it and I never unchecked the "Dump" state on her poor corpse. Thanks!

All dwarves, non-goblin guests (maybe non-elf too?) and pets need to be buried, ideally in a tomb. Make a coffin, designate for burial. For the dog, remember to turn allow pets burial on.

Throw him/her/it under the atom smasher. Pull the lever and KABLOW. No need for tombs.

dead dwarf gathering is burial not refuse collecting, so they will still be collected
