Spin-Off Games
« on: January 15, 2011, 02:56:40 pm »

I wonder if there's any potential for some in the future?  The game has such a distinct personality, that could be carried into other forms for more in-depth exploration of specific aspects.

I would really really love to see a 3rd-person rpg/adventure game where you play a dwarf in a very large, mature fortress that is just entering a fatal tantrum spiral at the start of the game.  Your only goal is to be the last dwarf standing.  As we all know, tantrum spirals can play out over a year or more of game time in a large fortress, so this would involve a lot of crpg-style storytelling or even some grand theft auto flavor adventure.  You could carry out quests which play the tensions between the nobility and peasants.  Aid an increasingly mentally unstable military in fending off goblin sieges.  Spread rumors among unhappy dwarves that someone you don't like is the one who strangled their cat.  Or study the fortress lore and find there was an HFS breach that was promptly walled off 50 years ago and forgotten, then call a party next to it, deconstruct the wall, and run like hell.  So much fun could be had.

Just daydreaming, but it's fun stuff to think about.

There is a ton of value to be had instead in being able to export your own fortress and playing with it.

Gah!  I had originally planned to mention that.  Can't believe I forgot it.  Such a no-brainer.

Don't forget about pulling unlabeled levers. Or getting others to do it.

Now I'm just imaging an id software style game, running through labyrinthine forts with one pick and three crossbow-bolts.

Its because of the OP's avatar isn't it?  I had the exact same imaginings.

Perhaps it will one day be possible to play adventure mode like that.
