Noob Question
« on: January 14, 2011, 08:56:27 pm »

Hello interwebs,
After a semi-sucsessful fortress, i have decided i want to shoot stuf... IN THE FIRST PERSON. I have made an elf adventorer archer and after firing a whole round of wooden arrows at a rhesus monkey, missing all of them with 10 archer skill, and finnaly tackling it twice, i have killed my first innocent forest creature. The wiki is not being very nice, giving me a lot of fortress stuff. How do i butcher/make it into food. I am using 40d.

Here are the answers to both of your questions.

Knapping is the skill used to make sharp rocks, I believe. If you get two pebbles, and equip one in each hand, you can press X, go to 'create', and then 'make sharp rock'. This makes, of course, a sharp rock which you can use to carve up corpses, or throw at enemies.

The best way to make money is to sell equips. I don't recommend selling yours, because they happen to be all that you have as armor at the time. There are several ways to get equips. One, you can go on a quest to kill a night creature. They usually have a bunch of armor from previous victims lying around in their lairs. Or, you can recruit some allies, and get them killed by monsters. Then you can just pick up the free armor that they leave behind.

Oh, and those monkey corpses weren't working because monkey corpses aren't exactly worth a lot. (How much would you pay for a monkey corpse?)

I could butcher it to make more monkey-leather and bone stuff!

...Are you guys paying attention?
I am using 40d.
This seems rather important.  You can't butcher or make things in adventure mode in 40d. Nor can you gather food from the environment in any way iirc.  If you want to do the things that everyone else is recommending, you'd have to download the newest version.

Yes, of course. For your tileset problem just download the lazynewbpack or phoebus tileset with dwarf fortress complete it's all pre installed just needs to be extracted. The farming is not a big deal, if you just embark on a biome that has some plant life and bring a plant gatherer to get seeds for surface crops.
And the military well yes it's complicated but also pretty versatile.

You cannot fire things at non-hostile entities, and being an elf, the monkey was not initially hostile towards you. If you fire or throw anything at them it just automatically misses them.

Ha!
HA HA!

But no, really, the farming thing isn't that hard to get around, and the military system is actually a lot better, when you get used to it.
And plus, if you just want to play adventure mode in the latest version, and fort mode in 40d, no one is stopping you. Seriously, adventure mode is a whole lot better in 31.18.

...Better expect that you don't see people wading after kobolds trough magma and punching people over the mountains. That often.
