DYK:  A laser pistol alone does enough damage alone to penetrate all but the front of a power armor.

Well, yeah, considering the first move is almost always going to have people firing at you. I've lost Hover Tanks(which have more armor than normal tanks) in the late game on the second difficulty level(I'm basically just beginning, so laughing at me would be just plain stupid) to Heavy Plasmas at or at the very least around the first turn.

Also, thinking about it... I have to agree that Lasers are kinda useless compared to Plasmas. Ever since I tried Heavy Plasmas in my game, I never went back because they were so effective. So count my Laser vote towards Heavy Plasma instead.

Lasers are faster to research and leave more of the 80-item limit for things like grenades/medpacs/etc. And they've got enough power to be useful at this stage especially. Also, sectopods. Just throwing that out there, especially considering that we have rather little by way of plasma weapons/ammo right now.

Though researching Plasma early while there isn't all that much heavy action may save time in the future.

leave more of the 80-item limit for things like grenades/medpacs/etc.
At this stage of the game, I doubt the 80 item limit is much of a problem.

Also, sectopods. Just throwing that out there, especially considering that we have rather little by way of plasma weapons/ammo right now.
By the time we encounter Ethereals, I'm pretty sure that Lasers would've already been researched just for completion.

True. I've always been a strict adherent to the shooty>zappy>blasty chain myself. Might be kind of cool to see it done in a different order.

Ditto. I've never seen people skipping Lasers before, so skipping lasers may be interesting.

Maybe at the high end, but their low end is significantly lower.

The problem with skipping lasers is, of course, the fact that you have to skip heavy laser cannons, which are almost four times more efficient profit makers than the motion scanners are.

Fusion Ball Launchers are even BETTER though if we can keep up our supply of alloys...

Question:
Should ammo recycling be allowed this game? Yes or no?
(When a mission ends, all guns come back as guns, and the clips in them are destroyed. If you take the clips out first, they both come back as their own items)

Well that was fast. Put me back in as Oruza with the same setup.

Anyway, regarding the suckiness of tanks in general, it's a tank. The tracked ones don't have much reactions, and killing something with them doesn't earn it any experience or such. Personally, I only use tanks to draw out fire as they come down the ramp, and only shoot as a last resort if no one has TUs.

Also, skipping lasers isn't that difficult. It allows you more time to research critical stuff such as armor and hyperwave decoders, etc. The only time I ever needed lasers was for Cydonia, because of the 80-item limit.

Have you started building alien containment yet?

Edit: Also, what do you mean by 'normal' screen size? The screen size I play X-COM with is the same as in my LP, and I can't imagine playing it at such a small size. What image capture do you use?

Nope. It's actually a bug in the game that might cause you to think that. See, the first in a stack of ordered FBLs don't need an alloy, so unless you want to micromanage every one that comes off the racks, HLCs are the way to go.

I'm pretty sure the numbers still say they win (adding opportunity cost of selling the alloy to the cost of the FBL). The problem of course is that the alloys are a bit more valuable than that and probably shouldn't be wasted on selling stuff.

Problem with going plasma this early is that we don't have a lot of ammo yet. I usually do lasers first since they take no ammo and then switch to plasma once I've got enough of a stockpile to avoid having to manufacture ammo (since that takes Elerium).

The no-ammo aspect of lasers is also really good with rookies, since they can burn through shots without running out of ammo.


Oh, and some advice given in RP!

"Sir, I was thinking about that last mission. I think we should consider throwing down a smoke screen outside the plane before sending anyone out. It'd make it harder for the aliens to shoot our men before we spot them. No reason to make things any easier on the bastards."

Meph, as long as you take care of your ammo recycling I don't see that likely being a problem (and its why I pushed for plasma rifles over the superior heavy plasma). If we veto ammo recycling, then I could see it being an issue.

So I guess really at this point... its down to whether or not we want to allow ammo management.
