Song of Ice and Fire
« on: January 14, 2011, 02:18:17 am »

So after hearing from a couple of people that these books are good, I decided to read them.  The first book got my interest, and was pretty good.  However, it was reallyyyy looong, as was the second and third of the series.

However, I do not think I can finish the series.  I just got the fourth book (A Feast For Crows), but I hesitate to open it, because the series is so fucking depressing.  Seriously.  I can't stand it.  I can handle bad things happening to characters, but not when they happen over and over and ARG I just want to reach into the book, take everyone and start slapping the shit out of them.  Then install sprinklers that spit out sunshine, and make smoking pot mandatory.

Anyway, I may finish it eventually.  The series itself isn't finished, the author is on the fifth book which looks like it will be released soon, with two books after that.  Who knows when it will be done though, if ever.

Has anyone else read the book, and if so, what are your thoughts on it?

Every time someone says or does something depressing, take a drink of beer. Nothing gets you through a bad book better than beer goggles.

It's not a bad book, it's incredibly well done.  Just extremely depressing.  It's hard to think of a point where any of the characters were happy, except in the very beginning before everything went to hell and it started raining shit.

You're funny. The book was supposed to be out several years ago.

I can't help but suspect that the author is just as depressed as you are.

At least HBO is managing to do everything on schedule. The TV show is looking to be some great watchings.

I started reading them about five months before A Feast for Crows came out, and about mid-way through A Storm of Swords I was nearly physically depressed between Dany chapters. By the time AFFC came out I was feeling well enough to go right into it. Be warned, it IS an aftermath piece. And some of your favorite characters might not show up in it at all because it only involves itself with half of the plotlines.

Note that me starting to read them five months before AFFC came out means that it's been the full five years wait for me. The person who introduced me to the series had been waiting five years for AFFC.

You know which fantasy author can help with the wait? Robin Hobb. :)

Or, actually, Glen Cook. Or Guy Gavriel Kay.

I'm going to start reading this after just being riveted by all 10 episodes of Game of Thrones. So awesome.

I did that too, got the first four books a week or so ago, i'm some 100 pages shy of finish the first one.The book so far is very depressing really, it's like he enjoys giving us likeable and awesome characthers only to have them mauled/killed/exiled/whatever bad comes to mind, that evil evil bastard.

Edit:

Now that i think about it, it might be the reason why the books and the TV show are so riveting, you keep watching and expecting that moment when one of you main charachters says fuck it and goes apeshit on the bad guys, but it seems that never comes, so you keep reading, and it gets worse and worse as you go :(

I haven't read this series, but I don't think I could stand thousands pages of what I've heard is a re-setting'd The Jungle.
