Hey guys,
Thanks to the 'NoExotic' mod I'm able to bring along a wide variety of creatures with me to act as security while I set up my fort and to provide a decent supply of meat should when it comes to that. I've already gotten a pair of dogs for meat and easy siege fodder, but I'm unsure as what other animal to bring.

So far I've narrowed it down to: grizzly bears, elephants, or lions/tigers _{(these two seem interchangeable)} for my war animals. Sadly there are no giant eagles available.

I'm trying to balance out part value and combat effectiveness with breeding frequency and growth time. What are your suggestions?

Well yes I was going to do that in the first place, but I hear that elephant calves take forever to mature and I want a stable breeding pop going as well. Do you know how the maturing times for grizzlies and lions compare to elephants?

As much as I like cats in real life, I find that bringing cats along in DF is too much of a hassle, even as a food source, seeing as I always miss a few before they adopt a dwarf. After that, its pretty much downhill from there. Beside the dwarves bring plenty on their own. Why should I have to spend supply points on something I get for free eventually anyway? Madness I say!

I <3 elves. One year they brought me a breeding pair of grizzlies, the next year, a lion and an elephant, the following, mates for those two. So, yes, I do know the maturing rate difference. TBH, I found it worth it since and elephant gave you a lot of meat when you slaughtered them, or when made war animals, they actually did something other than die. Grizzlies and lions took little time(around a year I think) to mature, with elephants more like 3, but I got a lot more out of elephants than I ever did grizzlies or lions.

Hey thanks for answering that question for me, I figured as much.

Well my question is moot any since I decided to shift some supplies around to get both a pair of grizzlies and elephants. _{(I may have given myself an overgenerous budget this time around...)} Thanks though.

Edit: Never really had a problem with regular vermin to be honest. Besides the more annoying pests like flies and their ilk are immune to everything anyway. Cats just don't have that many pros to outweigh a potential FPS death/tantrum-spiral-due-to-a-pet's-death death.

Bring 2 polar bears, 2 grizzly bears. Embark on shrubland+savage mountain+moist forest/swamp or near an elf civ with access to those you dont. Congratulation, you have tapped on ALL war trainable creatures.

Add USE_ANY_PET_RACE to dwarves and you can embark with Giant Cave Spiders. They're 1251 apiece though so it's a better idea to buy them from the caravan. They pay for themselves the first time they discover a cloaked enemy and fire off a spray of webs. Chain them in front of a trap array and you'll soon have a collection of caged kobolds your dwarves can laugh at.

Giant Desert Scorpions are also pretty awesome especially with [TRAINABLE] added to them and given the ability to reproduce.
