Best thing to do with a caged ettin?
« on: January 13, 2011, 01:56:07 pm »

I'm using it as target practice for marksdwarves. Anything better to do?

Not really, no.  He should be able to absorb a lot of crossbow bolts before expiring, and shooting at creatures gives your marksdwarves 30xp per shot compared to 6xp from archery-targets.

Place him far away from your marksdwarves to ensure that there will be plenty of "misses".  You get 30xp per shot FIRED, not per hit.

Also remember that Ettins are building-destroyers, and design your firing-chamber accordingly.

That will work beautifully.

Pro tip: If you channel-out the tiles right in front of the back-wall, bolts that miss and hit the wall will fall down into the trench unharmed.  If you're trying to conserve ammo, it can be nice, but it can also result in massive piles of singleton ammunition everywhere, and you can only fit 25 singleton bolts into a bin, compared to 4 stacks of 25.

Also, use bone or wood bolts for shooting the Ettin, since they might be less effective at killing it.

How do I tell a dwarf to use certain types of ammunition?

I have no idea, but I know that this is bugged.

It's probably best to just tell them to use bolts and forbid ammunition you don't want them using.

Go to ammunition under the Z-Stocks menu, and forbid all metal types.  Make a bunch of wooden/bone bolts.  It might work.  or you can just say "screw it, just shoot the bastard" and turn that two-headed freak into a pincushion.

Err, they're not shooting. Any workarounds for marksdwarves?

Search for the marksdwarf not training thread. I made a post there that hopefully covers all cave-ats/bugs.

There you go, your problem is probably just no ammo designated to their squad or all your ammo designated to the hunters. Check the ammo designations with (m)->(f), then remove all items and create a new bolt item for your ranged squad (set it to at least 25*<number of crossbowdwarves).

I personally use things like trapped ettins to fight trapped goblins.  I set them up in rooms that close with a flood gate and open up their cages simultaneously.  Entertainment for the whole fort.

Tried finding that thread.

Not the problem. They're training, and IGNORING THEIR KILL ORDER. I'm pretty sure kill orders are bugged, are there workarounds?

Yes, station them in front of the fortifications with a (m)ove order. Notice that dwarfs who are of low skill will fail to shoot through fortifications if they're not right next to them, so you might have to restrict the possible tiles they can occupy by building walls.
