1056 called, and it wants its fort back...
« on: January 13, 2011, 09:58:44 am »

I am making my first real adventurer and need some help. A little background:

I was making a fortress, doing well (probably too well). A human caravan came in summer of year 2. Along with it came a lovely invasion of about 25 goblin lashers. I've never seen so many goblins so early, and I was totally unprepared. My undertrained and underequipped army was wiped out without killing any goblins, and my fort collapsed.

I tried a reclaim after reading on the wiki that invaders will not be hostile to reclaiming dwarfs. Wrong. My guys died within minutes. I did notice that the human caravan (just a merchant and two soldiers) was still around.

Anyway, my plan is to have my adventurer come in and wreak some havoc so I can reclaim safely. It's a very nice fort, and due to RL time restrictions, I don't want to redo the whole thing.

The problem is that I suck at adventure. I've made a few guys, and as soon as I think I am doing well, I randomly get a collapsed lung or such from a sucker-punching rogue chief and quickly die.

I am at work now, but at home I have a 10,000 loop macro cycle running with macros and autohotkey (cheesy, I know), knapping and throwing stones, so I plan to come home to a super-strong, super-fast legendary thrower with a bag full of very sharp rocks. He's a skilled axeman, armor user, and shield user.

What would be the best way to train and gear up my guy for such a huge battle, and what would be the best way to fight it? Sneak with ranged weapons? Tank it? Bring an army? I am considering creating another macro loop when I get home to get a legendary sneak.

Help! My dorfs want their fort back.

you should get followers, LOTS OF THEM. then just let them do all the work.

but for that you will need to complete lots of quests

And then I need to train the followers, right? Any easy way to do that, besides wolf grinding?

Don't bother with that. Just do a bunch of quests and walk to your local fortress. Every soldier will happily abandon their duty and come adventuring with you. Bam, instant tin-man army. (They all wear armour)

It isn't a new Dwarf Fortress version until we're made to fear some kind of regular creature.  Carp, Elephants, Unicorns, Badgers, and now Mosquitos.  I've got 5 dorfBucks on the next one being plagues of groundhogs.

You can also take out a large group by throwing/fireing missiles while sneaking. Assuming you keep enough distance they will just stand still and let you fill them with holes.

If you want to get your adventurer equipped cheaply, just take what you want from the shops.  The shop keepers won't attack you.  Of course no one in the civ will ever want to talk with you again either.

Best way to get lots of gear without making a civ angry is to loot everything that is not nailed down from a bandit camp.  Then you travel between the shop towns checking all the armor and general stores.  Try to avoid hauling too much currency since it is worthless to a different civ.

But beware of your awesomesauce.
I play Genesis and once you gain a good reputation, enemies will COME TO YOU.

Just a quick note, be sure to get your adventurer fully suited in armor, and if possible a good shield. I can't tell you how many times armor has saved me from a random lung/heart/brain hit. Especially those pesky arrows.

I will post the save when I get home, but I'd like to do it myself (unless I just fail miserably for ages).

So can adventurers just stack armor indefinitely? That's what it seems like so far when I raid camps.

Also, stupid question, but how do you take items out of a treasure chest or bag?

Stand on top of the chest/bag and press 'g'. That should bring up all the items in the chest/bag. Then you scroll through the list and find what you want.

Not indefinitely, but they can wear an insane number of clothes.  Check the wiki page for Armor and you'll see the maximum equipment loadout.

Although infinite shields is a possibility, and will give you an indefinite number of chances to block.

Actually, shield block chance only applies to one held shield. However, you gain EXP from each shield you're holding when you block an attack.
Great way to go from Dabbling to Skilled pretty quickly.

Well, I did it.

(sorry I didn't post the save)

It was not very epic. I sneaked back and forth in front of peasants to become legendary ambusher. I knapped and threw stones and became legendary in those, too. I did maybe 10 quests, killed a dragon and minotaur just for fun, bashed a few skulls through brains, and one-hit headshotted a few gobbos by throwing arrows 20+ tiles away. I gathered an army and proceeded to trek across the entire world map, since all the human civs are only on one side of the map. My whole army except one peasant got murdered by marauders along the way, but I made it completely unscathed.

Once I got to the old fort, the peasant quickly discovered an escaped goblin thief and was stabbed to death. I clubbed his head in. I found about 10 lashers fighting a fireball-throwing megabeast, whom they killed. I hid three tiles away from them, threw arrows and rocks until they were all on the ground, and then nonchalantly walked up and bashed their skulls in. Not exactly epic.

Once the fort was safe, I realized I was screwed because there was nowhere to get companions this side of the world map. I slept, got attacked by bogeys, got tired of running, and jumped in a river that was blocking my path. I was hoping to die a dignified self-imposed death, but the bogeys jumped in after me and punched my lungs out. So much for dignity. I guess they are all expert swimmers too.

I started my reclaim and am currently in the process of collecting a hundred or so corpses. In retrospect, I should have made my adventurer do that. :(
