Perhaps you can mark an area off for animal sleeping.

nah, pets sleep where they want to.  But still, pets sleeping in hallways could get annoying and/or silly.  Pets should sleep in owners bedrooms, but I'm imagining meeting halls completely filled with dwarves crawling and tripping over sleeping stray animals.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

Wait for cat to sleep on owners bed.
Remove door and build wall.
Apply magma.

Yay, no more catsplosion.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I suppose you could leave the door and forbid it and let a moody dwarf rip it off its hinges.

Well I first intent to just make pets eat and drink and got them being able to sleep in the process (all use CAN_SPEAK for whatever reason.) However dwarves somehow refuse to eat CAN_SPEAK creatures and I'm trying to figure out if it's possible to turn that off.

I'm pretty sure it's in their ethics against eating intelligent creatures. Elves probably would be perfectly happy to chow down on a talking cat or dog.

In that case, wouldn't it be as simple as modifying the ethics? Hmmm mabey I can have Elf Bolts again.

I feel it unnecessary to have to feed tame animals... Keep it simple, or... simpler. But sleep can do, if in reasonable lenghts

well, simplicity isnt exactly the motto of DF :p

Ummm... last time I looked they do sleep, and eat...

I've had a couple pets die, when they chose to sleep on a rock trap. This was pre DF2010, so this behavure may have changed.

I've also had incidents when I've had pets starve because I ran out of food.

That's what DF needs, The gutbuster brigade.  Screw that elf and his cat. Thibbledorf Pwent is the real hero.

I think I recall seeing elsewhere that this is exactly how you get to make *Elf Bone Bolts* and *Goblin Skull Totems*.

Wheelbarrows with wheels are inferior to the true wheelbarrow.
you mean elves with loads of stone loaded onto their backs while walking on their hands with dwarves holding their legs to guide them?

It's not that big of a deal, but may add a bit of fun depth ^^
Depending on how you balance things. In example, right now war dogs are not very good once you have got access to wilder animals i.e. elephants and dragons. In my mod, this is very easy due to the large herd spawn. But what if for example, elephants demand booze and dragons demand food, booze and occasional sleeps then suddenly the cost of maintenance on these guys become a serious factor in their overall value. They probably will still be preferred over dogs, but the margin will be lessen. They will also eat up all the extra meat & booze your farm spew out, cleaning up the place and caging with place a very heavy burden upon haulers as they need to feed these guys. Depending on your dependence upon animals, this small change may affect your fort plan in more ways then you'd imagine.
