Should pets need to sleep?
« on: January 13, 2011, 04:17:28 am »

Well I was tweaking creatures and as a side effect, they start to sleep just like dwarves and tend to just lie down wherever they please, even in the wilderness. This is an unexpected development and I personally do not mind but I wonder if people think the same. Please vote and express your opinion, the result will be reflected in my mod :D

I think it's a reasonable addition. Assuming we won't need to start making little pet beds and whatnot, I think that it's a logical and unobtrusive addition. As for animals in the wild, I think I'd be fine with them not sleeping, but it might be interesting to see what happens when you time your dwarves' attack for when the forgotten beast is snoozing...

In fact I have noticed they dont eat or anything, I mean, you can have animals chained for ever and they are happy as always.

It have always bothered me that animals dont have the basics needs of the dwarves

I see no problem with all suitable creatures sleeping.

it might be interesting to see what happens when you time your dwarves' attack for when the forgotten beast is snoozing...

That is an incredible idea - something that I'm actually a bit surprised hasn't been implemented - Dragon/FB lairs! A cave filled with coins of various metals, high-quality trade goods, weapons, armor, etc.

And of course, a fearsome FB/dragon that's dangerously protective of its loot... :D

but back on topic - yeah, I think that sleeping is no biggie for pets/animals, but to go off of what Krelian said - what about pets needing to eat?

what about pets needing to eat?
That'll ruin all their usefulness since you won't be able to confine them anymore. I'm fine with drinking though (they can drink salt water, can''t they?)
Won't sleeping modification cause them to occupy beds in dormitory and hospital?
If not is it possible to get above mentioned animal beds? I'd like to create some sleeping pillows for cats, made of something magma safe of course.

Well I first intent to just make pets eat and drink and got them being able to sleep in the process (all use CAN_SPEAK for whatever reason.) However dwarves somehow refuse to eat CAN_SPEAK creatures and I'm trying to figure out if it's possible to turn that off.

I'm pretty sure it's in their ethics against eating intelligent creatures. Elves probably would be perfectly happy to chow down on a talking cat or dog.

you mean elves with loads of stone loaded onto their backs while walking on their hands with dwarves holding their legs to guide them?

What, drinking booze and slacking off? Don't you think your brewer(s) have enough job already?

I feel it unnecessary to have to feed tame animals... Keep it simple, or... simpler. But sleep can do, if in reasonable lenghts

It's not that big of a deal, but may add a bit of fun depth ^^

Not only for depth, it might also help keep cats out of the way of trouble >:I

I personally wouldn't mind building housings for pets too

Pet houses - such as dog houses, kennels (maybe small cat houses made of thread/cloth?) would be a nice addition. You would either have large dormlike kennels/stables, where unclaimed animals would sleep, and then "owned" pets that will sleep in their masters room, either on the floor, or in a "bed/house"

Longterm this could combine realistic stable buildings(workshops) where you can thether an animal (such as a cow) and feed/water/milk it using the workshop stockpile.

If being asleep means they don't path, then yes.
