Find the leader, ask them if you can sit down, and then try your damndest to join the conversation.  Introduce yourself to the whole group (AFTER you sit down), of course.

Look for the person people are looking at for approval, especially after telling jokes.  Don't let cross-fire from crushes/best friends in the subgroup confuse you.  They should be fairly relaxed-looking and doing nothing to make themselves look smaller.

Also, practice in classrooms.  It's usually pretty easy to tell who the teacher's favorite is without these cues, so they're a good start.

Because socialising with strangers is the only way to make acquaintances, which is the only way to make friends. You'll never find those golden 5% if you're not willing to wade through the rest.

This sounds pretty reasonable, but inventing a problem? I don't think I want any introductions to be, "HELP, MY HOUSE IS ON FIRE" or somesuch. What scale of problem is the most reasonable?
