ND is actually doing pretty well last time I checked. Paved roads are actually annoyingly expensive to maintain, while gravel isn't. It's more a matter of decentralization on a State scale. The State runs a surplus, but little counties don't. Of course, when the State has been giving control of(and responsibility to pay for) stuff back to the States, there can be a bit of a problem.

Most of that article was about Michagan, anyway.

Learned any interesting acronym in my class today (I kinda work as a kinda intelligence person in the US Army) SWEAT MS is our goal for Iraqi governments.

What? I suppose it's technically cheaper to repair when it needs to be repaired, but at its best it's as bad as heavily degraded pavement, degrades much, much faster, severely limits travel speed while decreasing control, and causes heavier wear and tear on anything driving on it. Tearing up paved roads to replace with gravel to save money on maintenance just seems a lot like cutting off your feet to save money on shoes.

tax rate itself is a jump from 3% to 5% (which is indeed a "67% increase").  Booga booga booga.
O_o

Multiply those percentages by 10 to get what I'm paying.

I believe he said state, not federal.  Just FYI, not an argument.

I know, but I'm just taking a wild guess here that state+federal < 40%...

Yep.  If you were making over $250,000 a year, and made all of that in payroll checks and not dividends or investments or small business revenue or anything, and lived in Illnois, your effective income tax rate would be... about 38% I believe.  Maybe 40%, I forget exactly.  Heck, I think you can deduct state income tax from your federal income tax, or maybe that's gone now.

Not an expert on New Jersey, but I haven't heard of it being completely free of crime.  Isn't firing half the police force a recipe for terrible chaos?

CH3 is propane.  It's flammable.
No it's not.  Propane is C3H8.  I don't think CH3 is possible at all due to valency issues (unless you're using an empirical formula for something like ethane, I guess).

The gravel roads thing is a result of the state giving the roads back to the (unpopulated, rural) counties and telling them to deal with it. And it's cheaper to just grind up the road surface instead of, y'know, paving it. Granted, it's going to come back to bite them in the ass in car maintenance if nothing else, but what choice do they have?

See, this is the part that I don't understand: That going to all the trouble of depaving the roads somehow saves money.  Wouldn't the cheapest solution be to just leave the paved roads as is, and if you really want gravel roads, just stop maintaining them and wait a while?

A couple've weeks ago, I was thinking of my political views and I stuck myself in the far-left, authoritarian corner of the political spectrum. I was wishing there was a party that shared my beliefs on both protecting and helping the people from themselves and others.

It was only after a few days of pondering that I realised there were lots of parties like that, and one had been in force in Germany for quite a few years in the 20th century.

I'm a god damn communist. After that I decided not to apply labels to myself ever again.

He meant the Soviet puppet state of East Germany. The nazis weren't in power for "quite a few years", while the Soviet puppet state lasted for decades. Also, it was immediately followed by "I'm a communist."

The problem with communism is that it always ends up being a tyrannical socialist state.

Though, just about all of them were the spawn of Stalin and pals, so maybe if it were organised by a non-insane non-dictator it could turn out alright.

On a lighter note, I was playing Tropico 3 and now I can not stop seeing parallels in real life. The biggest slam was the news of Baby Doc wanting to return to Haiti. Blew. My. Mind.
