Elf caravans always empty.
« on: December 17, 2006, 11:18:00 am »

Don't know why, but they never bring anything. My fort wasn't starving so I don't believe anyone stole their food before they arrived.

I get this sometimes too.  I am very careful about not offending them by trading animal-source items, and besides, even if I did do it by mistake, their greeting message seems much too friendly for that to explain it.  Moreover, if you trade them something that offends them, I assume they won't come at all, rather than come with empty wagons.

So I have never figured out what causes the empty-elf-caravan phenomenon.  I asked on the wiki too (under "Talk:Elves"), and nobody could help.

The intruder arose, casting off its black cloak.  "Behold, stunted jesters!  It is I, Scuro!"  A jagged scar marked the goblin's face from eye to chin, his greasy mane gray and wild, and about his neck was the broken silver amulet, strapped together by a leather band.

I'll create a report.  I don't have many ideas, unless they can't find any necessities and don't have any crafts/pets to bring, but they should always know how to make certain crafts.

They've brought me harvested food and rarely some cloth.  I'm still using the last 'a' version right now.  The sieging goblins just chopped them up after the diplomat warned me about trees though ;p

I've tried a number of configurations, and they'll either bring me lots of cloth and food if they think I need them, or they'll bring me booze, extracts and wooden crafts.  I'm not sure what's going on.  If there's a save that exhibits this behavior, I might be able to do something with it.

I just got the same thing from a Dwarf Caravan.   I didn't have a depot when they showed up.  I did build one but it finished right after the "The merchants need a trade depot to unload their goods." message.

I'm upping a save and I'll post a link.

Retro

It may have been starvation now that I think about it here.  I'll post the save anyways just in case.

I just saw a small band of my dwarves raid the arriving elven caravan, because they were hungry. But I still think it strange that they didn't eat the freshly slaughtered horses, but raided the poor elves instead.

EDIT: So maybe my experience wasn't a bug afterall great Toady.

Maybe there should be some kind of alert when this happens - a message that says "your hungry dwarves are raiding the caravan for food" so that people won't think that the caravans are bugged.

The caravan was definetly, much further away.

Yeah, it should be announced.

Now that's a good idea.  Empty caravans due to this have confused many a player.

I really don't think this is it.  In the game that I complained about on the wiki, the caravans were empty year after year after year -- I didn't see a scrap of food or cloth for five or six years before finally giving up on the game.  My dwarves were well-fed and everything was fine.  Even if they raided the caravan the first year -- which I still don't believe they did -- it doesn't explain the repetition.

I'll keep taking saves on this.  If somebody has one that clearly demonstrates something, then I can fix it.  I'll look at the save above when I get a chance.
