In my previous fort, I got tired of hungry heads flying into my fort, so I tied a cow down there. The hungry heads almost always killed the cow  and if they didn't the cow would have many red damages.

My guard cow was also badly hurt by a hungry head (I forgot to bar the replacement door); maybe they're better at dodging or something. Or maybe your hungry heads attacked in large numbers?

prime reason I removed benign from most creatures. The game is much more enjoyable that way.

I'm tempted to do the same, at least for elephants. I read Boatmurdered early in my DF career and then started a tropical fort all ready and eager to have the fear of the gray death gored and trampled into my dwarves. Seeing some elephants follow the first caravan into my fort nearly gave me a heart attack (but I had cage traps ready). When I discovered that the blighters were just curious, not pissed, and that they wouldn't even fight back unless cornered, I was a bit disappointed.

It makes sense of them to be peaceful, but only until provoked.
