Strong cows?
« on: January 12, 2011, 09:08:56 am »

To deal with my livestock overpopulation and cave monsters at the same time I tied a spare cow to one of the cavern entrances. I also put a door there so that if a door-breaker came in I would at least get a warning.

So one day I get the door broken message and zoom in to see a troll fighting my guard cow. Due to congested hallways my militia were late in arriving but by the time they did the troll was a mess of bruises and broken bones. The cow was eagerly kicking the monster repeatedly in the head and the dwarves just administered the finishing blow.

Are cows meant to be stronger than trolls? I tried a ten bull vs ten troll match in arena mode and the bulls won pretty convincingly too.

troll: 250k size, mostly use edges horns & tusks
cow: 600k size, mostly use blunt hooves

Ya look like cows are destined to win. Their hooves are essentially warhammers.

benign animals usually run away from attackers, which means they are very likely to accumulate wounds, lose blood and eventually die. Due to this effect it is now possible to kill elephants with one or two armed recruits. however, if those large herbivores get cornered, enemies will find out how powerfull they really are. looks like this was the case with your cow

prime reason I removed benign from most creatures. The game is much more enjoyable that way.

Of course cows are powerful, don't forget that they're somewhat relative with the minotaur.
By the way if I add [trainable] tag to them in savegame raws will it take effect? Heck, I'll do that anyway.

Edit: yup, it worked. Now goblins will learn to fear horny menace!  :D

This is entirely accurate.

I actually have a few cows with the benign tag removed for some reason, and I am afraid to go near them.

I'd call them murdervines if anybody but me played DF around here.

I read somewhere that kicking is incredibly powerful, and that horses can take on dragons if provoked (proven through Arena-based !!SCIENCE!!). So yeah, that'll do, cow.

Thanks to this thread, I am now inclined to mod in [LIKES_FIGHTING] and [TRAINABLE] to my cows. Also, Horny the Horned Reaper, from Dungeon Keeper.

My dwarves have been one-shotted by deer kicks in the past, so it doesn't surprise me.

Beware the battle cattle — but don't fear the battle cattle!

Give cats natural metallic armor and throw them in your danger room.  Also allow their mouth and tail to grasp (shield in mouth, weapon in tail xD)  Have a cat based military.  You know, do the same with all tame animals xD send in the cats as shock troops to disrupt the archers

The cow army! [TCA]

If Finland can have police reindeer, then dwarfs can have military cows.
