Globulation 2
« on: January 12, 2011, 06:56:21 am »

I've just downloaded it and I find the concept fascinating. It's a very abstract RTS, in which you control some sort of alien hive. You don't control the units directly, but influence them by building different buildings, and changing hive settings. (it vaguely reminds me of the short story "Sandkings" by George R. R. Martin). There are alternatives to direct warfare too, as besides building up a warrior caste and sending it against your enemies, you can convert their units by being the one that supplies them with food.
All in all, its it's a challenging and "different" sort of RTS. Don't expect it to satisfy your bloodlust urges, but it's very "good-natured" feel gives it a certain charm.

Looks great.
Seems to be an open source game, with binaries for windows, mac and linux.

Free 13mb download, can't lose.

Twas the sandkings reference that made me have a look though, and i never even read it. Only watched the tv adaptation, which was good. I think it was the 1st episode of twilight zone or something. Outer limits maybe.

Would be handy to have a link.

At least for those of us who are too lazy to use the google search engine ;)

It's pretty neat, it reminds me of a strange combination of Sim Ant and the Majesty games.

The moment the lever was pulled, somebody's pet kitten stepped onto the bridge. I read somewhere that if a cat falls more than 11 stories, it instinctively flares its legs out to increase air resistance. This slows it down enough to stick the landing with relatively minor injuries. In Dwarf Fortress, apparently, cats don't do that.

It's pretty fun. A bit simplistic, but enjoyable.

Wasn't that the one about the guy who kept Martian scorpions in an aquarium?

I used to play LAN battles of this game at school with friends, good memories. If anyone wants to play, I am up for a game against comps or something, they beat me easily. :(

Just played through the tutorial, and I found it pretty damn sweet. Also, what do the Yellow and Red zones do?

Red if "Forbidden" area, your units will try to avoid entering it if at all possible. Yellow is Clearing, where workers will try to destroy resources in the zone, since Warriors can't move across them, even Wheat, or if you simply want to deny your enemies them. It's kinda redundant though, since there's a flag marker that does the same thing.

It's known as the Oppai-Kaiju effect. The islands of Japan generate a sort anti-gravity field, which allows breasts to behave as if in microgravity. It's also what allows Godzilla and friends to become 50 stories tall, and lets ninjas run up the side of a skyscraper.

And best of all, it's in my repository, so installing was as easy as the click of a button (or in my case, sudo apt-get glob2).

Now to see how it plays...
