To Jealbreak Or Not To Jailbreak
« on: January 12, 2011, 04:46:52 am »

That is the question. I just got an iPhone 3Gs, and I want to put NES/GBA emulators on it, and do other fun stuff. So I was wondering, what are the negatives to jailbreaking an iPhone? I know it voids the warranty, but are there other negatives? Are the chances of my iPhone bricking high? Is it easy to do?

Heh, I thought this was about the Quake 2 mod.  I have no idea what you're talking about, sorry for the spam. :)

I know it voids the warranty,
Doesn't do that anymore.
but are there other negatives?
Nope.
Are the chances of my iPhone bricking high?
Nope, all it does is allow root access to your phone. Each and every Linux/Unix/OS X machine has root permissions enabled, and you don't see them breaking spontaneously.
Is it easy to do?
Yep, though it can't be done on 4.2, you'll have to wait for 4.3. Otherwise, just use Greenpoison.

The new legal precedent set by the Copyright Office is awesome. Fucks the DMCA in the ass when it comes to personal electronic devices and software :D This should got a long way in the current case, Sony Computer Entertainment of America vs George 'GeoHot' Hotz and the fail0verflow team.

It made Apple really, really mad, though.

To the OP: Jailbreak, but take note of your hardware limitations. The 3GS is a pretty speedy iPhone but some things (PSX emulation, I've heard, along with bad ports of x86 software) might not run fast enough for your liking. Also: there are a lot better forums on the internet if you need help with the jailbreak process, before and after.

note there is a issue, supposedly apple's firmware updates after that ruling made sure you couldn't jailbreak even though you can legally.

Sure, they are free to put whatever they want in their firmware updates. But they can no longer shout 'lawsuit' when the hackers break their new security, which they have already.

I thought this thread would be about actual breaking out of prison.

That would be a lot cooler.

I did jailbreak mine; but in the end I was not using anything from cydia nor I had anything worth keeping so I just restored the stock firmware. hd youtube over 3g was a nice have but not worth alone to keep it.
