Like so many other adventurers, you start your journey in a tavern.
To the north, you see a bulletin board, covered with lost dog and cat ads, and maybe a wanted poster with your heads on it as well. The barmaiden yells at you to buy something or else, and you have no doubt she's not kidding around.

But I'm getting ahead of myself, you didn't just pop up in this tavern you know. You came to be in this town through a hectic series of events, in more or less this order: First the king was betrayed and killed by his most trusted adviser, a wizard by the name of Skeline. The entire king's army went after him, but being a wizard of truly terrifying power they were no more than blades of grass, simply to fall before his spells. With the king's army gone, one of the wizards being held in the castle could simply blow the doors to all the cells down without worrying about any guards. As word got around, there were mass breakouts in all the prisons in the country, nowhere is safe now. But I still haven't told you your part in this, have I? You were the king's personal bodyguards, allowed anywhere with the king, except private meetings with Skeline. Bet you can guess when he was killed. You managed to escape the massacre, but only barely, and one of your fellow guards was killed. Now you're wanted dead by the new tyrannical ruler, Skeline himself.

"Ma'am?  Do you have some milk?"  Hayyim asks and glares at his fellow soldiers as if daring them to tease him again so he can sneak a rattlesnake or whatnot into their cots.  They should know by know that he once he starts drinking, he doesn't seem to be able to stop ordering stronger and stronger drinks until he gets into trouble.
