Max Companions = Easy Mode?
« on: January 12, 2011, 03:13:02 am »

I recently retired an adventure but his retirement is not so important as to his methods of attaining it.  While my adventurer was certainly competent in many skills and has slew many marks solo he was without merit for many of his later marks.  Many of the later marks he attacked were taken care of by his party of what was usually about 20 something adventurers (oddly what killed most of them was a kobold ambush as we lay sleeping in the wilds) who usually slew the mark with few injuries and few casualties (as a side note none of the companions ever attained elite status, oddly).  After routinely setting up a process by which I returned to a castle to recruit more bum rushers and set off to slay a titan/dragon/hydra by simply idling around the mark after I set off its aggression my adventurer grew in enormous fame and eventually slew his last mark with little assistance from his peasant ally that somehow managed to never die since the beginning of his quest although he did lose one arm and three other companions, another of which was armless.  As I retired him I pondered of the strength of my many fallen companions and wondered if it was honorable to have had so many companions do the deeds which were attributed to my adventurer.

So it is my question to you, my fellow adventurers - how many companions do you believe is honorable in realistically taking to ensure your survival?

On another side note my adventurer many times one hit killed his enemies with a kick to the head and once even with a scratch to the head.

Yes well, i kind of thought this until a massive bandit ambush massacred my 28 followers, and maimed me permenantly.
It doenst make it easy, it gives you an excuse to not participate in combat.

DF, like all games, plays out how you play it.

ditto as 6 night creatures can wipe out a hand full of peasants they will all fall if they attempt to take on a 99 speed bronze who has a adept dodge skill.

More companions means bigger ambushes, and getting them all to fight one monster opponent effectively is nigh-impossible because of space issues.

Why the hell are you modding bronze colossus to make it harder? 20 companions is barely at an advantage against that given how few of them will be able to do shit.

I usually make it a point to never recruit anyone. I currently have a dwarf that is working on depopulating the large world of megabeasts and titans completely by himself.

Mörul Rayrock the Peak of Allegiances

I am a little more than half-way there, if not more I think. There are about 2 bronze colossi that I haven't gone near yet but so far I have killed many hydra, dragons, and 4 titans. I usually travel without stopping for days straight, and just hack away entire bands of bogeymen in a matter of seconds while very drowsy without a second thought. I wouldn't find this nearly as impressive if I had a huge band of warriors along with me. Also, I usually dislike when they take the final hit for the kill on a particularly tasty-looking mark.

My point being that companions can make things pretty easy, but it's ssooooooo much more satisfying to play without them, albeit harder.

When I did use companions, I found maybe 2 or at most 3 to be an acceptable number for easy management and actually being able to get in on the action yourself. I would usually have 2 bowmen and a swordsman (or other melee profession).

About six. All peasants. If some of them die, pick up more at the next town. The strongest will survive. They eventually become more skilled than you are (I think they skill up faster than you), and will often get 1-2 hit kills. Knives are crazy. I know that one of the peasants in my current party has more kills - normal and megabeast- than I do. The only thing that can take them down is dragon fire, although most of them are missing something important, like a hand or foot, and some of them are missing limbs.

If any of them die I pick up their knife to remember them by. I've got about ten knives in my adventurer's bag now, the weight is starting to add up. :/

I don't like to get more than maybe 1 or two companions although in one of my games I had a pretty epic dude who killed stuff in one shot like everytime (I started with peasant skills no wrastlin small animals for skills either) and that adventurer died in a huge battle between my 12 or so followers and a war party of the evil guys that was epic. me and the leader of the war party killed eachother nearly at the same time around the blood and carnage it was even raining.

But back to my point is I ussually go at it alone but as you can tell I had like 12 or so followers at that one point and still got killed (mainly because my foot was smashed at the beginning of the battle damn lucky attacks)

If you look at your companions in legends mode after you die/retire you'll notice that they DO get credit for their kills and many will become heroes in their own right.

So, no, I'd say it's not dishonorable. You're just getting the credit due to a commander for the deeds of the company, not taking any actual glory from those who follow you.
