Adopting Vermin
« on: January 12, 2011, 12:24:39 am »

I cannot find captured vermin in the Animals menu. Is there any way to put them up for pet adoption without that menu?

Vermin pets, I think, would be pretty good as they would be ignored by most enemies. Been having trouble with my cats killed by Ice Wolves.

Tried that, didn't work. The kennels say that I need tameable small creature.

The creatures are bought from a caravan. Does that mean anything?

I have some freshly tamed vermin I'de be willing to donate to a good home.

PS: Vermin are even smaller than a small creature, and therefore don't count for training at the kennel. But they make fine caged house pets. Especially if someone has a vermin fettish. But I haven't seen anyone with that, so mostly I just assign them all to one single cage at my zoo.

Sounds like the Vermin you're trying to tame is Exotic.

And what creatures are both vermin and exotic in this game?

All of the vermin apart from Bluejays, Cardinals, Grackles, Orioles, Red Winged Blackbirds, Hedgehogs, Rats, Roaches and Worms are exotic.

When a dwarf "adopts" a vermin, he puts it in his cabinet/coffer/bag/whatever in his bedroom. If nobody has any cabinet/recepticles, vermin won't be adopted.

I think animals bought from a caravan already arrive tame.

When a dwarf "adopts" a vermin, he puts it in his cabinet/coffer/bag/whatever in his bedroom. If nobody has any cabinet/recepticles, vermin won't be adopted.

Is that a new feature? Because it used to be that tame vermin would be carried around.

It is my understanding that any tame animal assigned for adoption will eventually be selected by a dwarf, as long as they have a preference for said animal.

Animals bought from a caravan are already tame, but exotic pet animals don't show up on your animal list unless you have a Dungeon Master.

Animals which are adopted are carried around by their owner.  Dwarves will not put their tame animals in cabinets or chests.
