I just read the thread title and wanted to inform you that the swiss people (includes me) are going to vote for or against the right to have your own gun at home, or if it is correct to even own one. Discussion on an english forum

I'm not sure, what I'll vote, since I don't know, what would happen to people that are in gun clubs and shoot in tournaments and do it for the sport. It's important to me because you could forget shooting as a sport, which is very popular (40'000 people at the national gun festival last year).

also, sorry for my english ;D

The pro referendum group are seeking:
- Store all army issued weapons in army depots and arsenals
- A national firearms register
- Potential firearm owners should be able to prove why they need a weapon and should be of good standing.
- Withdrawal of surplus guns from circulation.

That makes it sound more like other heavily regulated countries' laws, rather than banning civilians from owning firearms entirely. Which seems a lot more agreeable.

Also, your English is actually really good.

No using. That's not what freedom is for.

Odd though, I assume target shooting isn't a valid reason.

Why?  It is in other places.

Iirc, the crucial one for Switzerland could actually be the first one.  At the moment, those in the "national guard" (their reserve army, all appropriately aged men are in it) keep their rifles at home.

Target shooting is probably a valid reason, not self defense, if it's like everywhere else.

Then why wouldn't everyone say they were using it for target?  Someone breaks into your home, you only have access to the gun as your baseball bat was removed from your room by the kid... lawyers can argue just about anything.

Andir, Finkus, I'm happy to see that you both have prepared reasonable plan for dealing with intruder should they enter your house. But then, is the event that the robber deliberately choose to get up the stair likely enough to use a full 1000$ to improve your chances in this case? A baseball bat wouldn't do the trick?

I'm sorry, I don't understand the bolded part.  I realize there is probably a bit of a language barrier, so could you please rephrase it?

As for using a baseball bat for self defense, there are a number of problems with that.  A baseball bat would be very difficult to swing in an enclosed area (such as a house) and would require me to be much closer to the intruder than a gun would.  I'm a scrawny wimp (6 feet tall and 125 pounds) and I'm sure most men could overpower me.  If they had even a kitchen knife (can't ban those) I would be screwed.

:Edit: heh, looks like I just found a good deal on a 91/59 (uncle is selling it) looks like Nikov's Mauser will soon have something to fight.

You touch on an important point:  Guns as an equalizer.

Suppose a little old lady (5'0'', 80 lbs soaking wet) is attacked by some hulking brute (6'8'', 300 lbs).  How easily do you think she can defend herself with a bat?  A knife?  A gun?

I suppose there's always pepper spray...

Obviously, life alert.  That little button scares intruders.

The golf club is a better choice than the bat. Smaller area of impact.

The bat is a better choise then the golf club. Larger area of impact.

Honestly, if hit a guy with a bat, he isn't going to just shrug it off, he may very well be knocked out. Were not trying to kill him, so the bat will do.

And once again, we can see how the rightist-conservative politicians in Switzerland downright lie to the people.
It's kind of infuriating.
Nobody ever talked of civilian firearms, only the assault rifles.
Yet, the SPP makes it look as if the evil leftists were once again out to destroy Switzerland and the Swiss culture and remove all guns from the well-trained and responsible militia forces. The removal of assault rifles from the national defender's home is a conspiracy to destroy the Swiss army.
