I'm slightly changing my vote, from GDS venom to GDS venom that's been modded to work as a contact poison.

Swim across this, ye bastards! And then watch me as I run away like an asshole until your central nervous system is replaced with a central necrosis system!

Molten cheese. With some magma one z-level underneath it it should have a nice sticky consistency. And all the enemies will die a greasy death by drowning.

The answer is quite obvious. Turn the entire moat into a temple dedicated to Armok.

Hot olive oil, but only a little bit at the bottom, so intruders are nicely baked. :)

I did vote for FB extract, but I have decided on an even more dwarfy substance:

Molten pitchblend (uranium ore), possibly mixed with mercury and other heavy metals. Essentially if you fall in the moat you catch fire, melt, die, and then your ghost gets freaking ghost-cancer*!

PS. To anyone suggesting booze, shame on you. You don't waste good booze in a moat where it will soak into the surrounding ground (unless you're crazy enough to line your moat with block walls) and get tainted by the rotting corpses of your enemies. Anyway, drowning in alcohol is something every dwarf should aim for in life, and should be considered an honourably death of which our enemies are unworthy. Rather, if you must be so traditional, you should fill it way magma. That purges impurities such as elves with cleansing fire.

This guy gets it, the problem with the child torture dungeon is that they weren't set on fire first.

Pff.  Fuck your alcohol purity.   :D

1) Dump booze.
2) Create awesome trench-blend of dwarven beer, wine, rum and ale for that fruity-hoppy flavor.
3) Fill with SNAAAAAKES.
4) Wait a year, for maceration.
5) Voila!  Your own dwarven blend of snake booze!  It's good against cancer!

Uranium isn't radioactive enough to give anyone cancer in a timely manner.
Plutonium(which so radioactive it is self-heating enough to burn you) on the other hand...

I'm shocked nobody has mentioned this.
I voted blood, but my blood shall be boiling. And, will contain syndromes (that my dwarves have been vacinated against) that will be constantly released into the air and cause rapid necrosis of the liver, left lung, third toes on both feet, half of the fingers total determined randomly on a case by case basis, and finally the brain, in that order, timed in a way so that the enemies will have just reached my inner booze moat (doubles as an emergency drinking location and a fishing location for the booze fish) and gandered at the glory that is my fertilizer piles (ammonia nitrate) when they die.

Or failing the above, just the boiling blood of valiant dwarven martyrs. (That the goblins will hopefully swim through)

No. I like my enemies to die as miserably as possible. That's why they're enemies. Enemies, not friends. There's a difference. I fight my enemies to protect my booze. ;)

Personally I'd go for a molten gold river inside the fort, as some vague homage to the river of gold in divine divinity >.>

Nothing saying the river cant flow into the moat though...

Pitch, preferably with a method of igniting it from a safe distance that doesn't require magma.

Though personally I'll be perfectly content with a moat full of good old-fashioned water if I can lay my hands on a breeding pair of crocodiles.

I think Toady's confusing interface better simulates the experience of a bunch of disorganised drunken dwarves running a fort.
