Underground crops can grow year round, only the Surface crops are limited.

If you think *that* is weird, think about Dwarf Fortress proper - where surface crops are universally unaffected by the weather, while underground cops can have very particular growing periods.

But yeah, all or most of our underground crops are fungi (aka mushrooms).  I think we're growing them on felled logs, which explains where their energy comes from (:

Uh, actually, IRL....

Mushrooms are grown in dirt with a liberal coating of shit.

So...we use animal crap for 'shroom fertilizer, which is why the farming room stinks so badly.

No, they aren't all fungi, quarry bushes for an easy example of a non-fungus underground crop.  But it's a fantasy world, so they don't need to follow the same rules as ours, so go us, we break the laws of physics daily.

On another unrelated related subject: winter should be a better season for hunting. Esp. dear because in the winter the bucks go into what's know as "rutt"(or the mateing season) they become really stupid and are a lot easier to hunt. And real or fantasy babies gotta get made.

Well, excuse me for wanting semi-science in a fantasy setting.  XP  You know, chlorophyll and all that BS.   ::)

There is some semblance of science, but there are more important things for Shade-O to do than make up a reason for how to certain plants adapted to live in an underground environment, and all that jazz.  I mean, we're also dealing with a world with an incredibly extensive cavern system, they might just be a natural part of the world that developed off the nutrients available within the caverns of the world.  Do you feel better now that it has been explained.  Seriously though, try to lay off the workload on Shade-O so we can get speedy updates and the game will naturally grow in depth as time passes and Shade-O has free time to add in reasons for the world to be like it is.

Yeah, as a friend once said about science, dont question it, just do it. Learn how it works when you are older. (Older being when shade-o increases complexity.)

Uh, I thought that would a DF programmer issue and not a Shade-O issue as they were the ones who made Cave potatoes and the like?  :?

They didn't feel the need to explain underground flora/fauna either, just the need to make a cool game.

Well excuse me for actually knowing the difference between a plant and a fungus then.   :P  Can we stop arguing now?  You're giving me a headache.   :-X

Yo, they grow in the cave which lacks the sun. With out sun no photosynthesis. So they simply absorbe the nitrogen through the ground similar to fungi. So childred, what is nitrogen enriched? That's right your poo. Put 2 and 2 together and ya get 4ilizer
