Ringing in my ears
« on: January 10, 2011, 08:27:08 pm »

Hey, for a very long time, maybe three years that I can remember I've had ringing in my ears, but only when I go upstairs in my house. Yes, I've researched tinnitus, and from what I can infer, I don't have it. My ears only ring when I go upstairs and is only a minor nuisance, but sometimes keeps me up at night if I think about it. I can't explain it, and it happens to my mother, too.

Some theories are that the pitch of the ceiling make funny soundwaves bounce around. This one I highly doubt. Another is that walking up the stairs pumps your blood through your body and makes your ears ring. This one I doubt too. Any ideas?

I always assumed it was caused by electronics.  Hmm...

Is there anything upstairs that could be causing a sound?

Another is that walking up the stairs pumps your blood through your body and makes your ears ring.

Do you get it when you walk upstairs in other buildings?

Chances are it's the actual upstairs of your house.  You may have some kind of echo or reverberation from something minor in there.

If you are, say, near a fan or something upstairs, do you hear it?  Maybe some white noise can drown it out.

If your mother also has it only when she goes up the stairs in our house, then I'd find it highly likely that it is environmental, and I'm sure House M.D. would agree with me :P

That being said, it doesn't necessarily have to be sound, it could also be caused by air pressure, I think.

Either way, you'd need some sort of experimental approach to locate the source. Try every room upstairs and see if it's worse somewhere. Try every room downstairs and see if you can't pick something up there. Make your downstairs area as quiet as possible for this, it might just be that this sound is everywhere but that it gets masked downstairs by other noises. Check outside as well.

Possibly a dull suggestion, but if you live at a particularly high altitude then the atmospheric conditions may be causing it.

Atmospheric conditions aren't going to vary much over a range of 10 feet. Especially not indoors.

Either your house has really strange acoustic properties, something is wrong with the wiring (although I have no idea what would do this), or it's a piece of electronics. Ask your mom if you guys can just completely shut off the breaker so that no power at all is going upstairs, then see if it still happens.

okay, new things

i should've said that my house isn't like moderns houses, the original building was built in the 1850s, and the rest was added on as time went by

my upstairs consists of two rooms, which are our bedrooms,  the pitch of the ceiling looks something like this

Code: [Select]
__
/..\

and as of late, no electronics are turned on in the upstairs, i unplug nearly everything that could suck energy (going green :D)

and we live on a hill, compared to the rest of the town, but i dont think atmospheric pressure would do it.

and I don;t think walking up other stairs would cause it.

It's a constant ringing, right? All the time, same pitch?

yeah, it's a constant ring

and as for the doctor, it's not really troubling me as 'life threatening' so i'll just leave it :P

well, i was just wondering if there was anyone who knew something i didn't so i'm going to lock this thread

if anyone has any major scientific breakthrough about ringing ears, pm me
