Computer Woes (Fixed)
« on: January 09, 2011, 11:33:57 pm »

g Got a new hard drive and graphics card. Plug them up and turn it on. Nothing came on. There is a green light on the back, so I know it's getting power. Help?

I'm guessing that "Nothing came on" means not even the CPU fan started spinning.

Power issue, more than likely. Check that every internal connector is properly plugged in.

If you still don't get anything after checking, disconnect the new hardware.

If that makes it work again, you've either got an electrical fault in one of them (connect one at a time to find which one) or they're just too power hungry for your PSU. Well, the graphics card would be, HDs don't demand that much.

Too power hungry. It takes 300 watts and the power supply is 350. Any further would be helpful.

If it's a cheap 350 watt supply I wouldn't want to run a 300 watt constant draw on it, it wouldn't handle it. Any decent psu should be okay though.

I assume you've tried disconnecting and reconnecting the graphics card incase it's just a dodgy connection from the first time you put it in? If you have a pc speaker make sure that is connected as you might be getting bios beep codes which could help, of course if not even the cpu fan spins up? it's not getting that far.

Yeah, if the PSU is 350W and the gfx card needs 300W for itself, no way you'll have enough left for the rest. Buy a new PSU, only option.

No gfx card actually required that much, it's just cheap lower power psu's aren't very efficient and don't provide stable power. My entire rig only used 140W stable and 160W peak despite what the parts claim.

something wrong with the new harddisk maybe?

Download one of the bootable linux distros for a usb stick and run a disk check.

All fixed. Had to install XP Pro instead of Vista, but fixed.
