So, me and some other Bay12 people got a hamlet with a cave, but we have no idea if there is actually any metal in there. We can mine some walls, but after mining out a tile or two (only border ones, wouldnt want the place to cave in on us), we've gotten only stone.

Is there a guarantee of finding some metal in a cave? Do we have to dig deeper to find it, or is it possible to find metal in the border walls?

When the world was generated, "Blobs" of ores were splattered around caves. Some caves are abundant (Rare), some don't have any at all.

Imagine DF with ore blobs, except you only have one layer to dig into. Sometimes you'll embark onto a level with ore, sometimes not, it's in a different area! :)

Okay, so we should probably get some rustroot to check if our cave has any. Though, is the whole underground layer a single continuous area? As in, can we mine all the way to a nearby cave/mine/cellar?

Yes, except for cellar, they're in their own pocket universe. And there are actually multiple underground layers, precious metals are found deeper in. The deeper you go, the harder the rock and the tougher the trolls.

Wow this looks like it got heavily upgraded. I played this when it first came out and am wondering how it's doing now. It seemed to be heading in a WURM (look it up) like direction.

Apparently

Anyway, trolls getting tougher as you go down is just my guess, it's based on the fact that this was a level 1 troll and I presume it was found in the first layer.

Well hopefully we will be lucky and not have trolls spawning anywhere near us. Though we might be forced to dig deeper for metals... :(

EDIT: In any case, what's the best way for us to meet up with larger Bay12 villages for trading? We have no idea yet where we are on the world map and how to find out where we are.

Actually, we can probably guess.

To be blunt, there is a penile shaped lake in the south west corner of the known world (more south than west).  We are between the two.

I've died 4 times. It's not a huge deal really, just feels like it at first.

Generally keep away from people. Usually if I see anyone that doesn't just look like a newbie, I tele.

Actually I almost think this would make a better LAN game for that reason :<
