Well the fact that we could claim over every entrance with Farmdwarves, we could have access to alot of places with a good Cave system too considering that they can easily jump supers or at least halfway across a super. I wonder if Crossroads can be built within them.

The is constant lighting through the Custom Clients that give night vision on constant. But those that want to play it true, candles last a long time and torches can be placed into torch posts which are not only buildable but moveable just like Candles...

Really? as well as the fact you can see a lot further with custom clients. Seems like there is a flaw in the information the server provides there.

There is one Client that allows you to see through everything so you can see people hiding behind a wall for example...

That is so full of cheat but hey people wanted this...

Yeah I'm not even going to be touching the planning phase, but if you need a hand in taking down wild animals and the like, I'll volunteer.

I intend to join up and give this game a shot at last.  I've never played before though, and I'm *insanely* busy this week, so I likely won't join until at least the weekend, when hopefully you veterans will have at least an idea of where we'll be and all that.

Shit man, count me in. What's the Hearth Secret going to be?

Edit;
Heck, I look forward to an underground place with you guys, if that's the plan.
I see we have no leader, shame.

Now, candles, for those who don't know...

Drying Frame > Wild Windsown Weed  > Wheat Seeds > Wheat Plants > (farm for) straw > beehive >beeswax > Candle.

Edit 2;
Also, forgot to mention but, if you want to build in an underground area, there's a couple of issues.

- Can carts be pulled into a cave, yet? Otherwise, that's alot of wood hauling.
- Can houses be built underground?

And also, who will be the seed player? ie, who will be the first in and give everybody else the hearth secret to teleport to?

I don't think that has been decided yet.
Not sure if we should be discussing it in public, due to security issues, but maybe some sort of Dwarf fortress meme, being one that is fairly popular among us, but that others wouldn't get.

Also, Around 12-14 hours ago (Not sure what timezone the H&h forum follows, so judging based on what time I read it) Loftar announced that it would be 'Within 24 hours'.
So, it should happen fairly shortly.

Anyway, I was wondering -

Loose villas, or a planned, structured village? I am personally for a more organized system of loose villas, but we should decide on this pretty quick.

Edit:

I know you can build most objects in caves now. Not sure about houses.. No idea about carts.

Edit 2:
I think the idea was that we are supposed to all create throw aways, and go looking for a spot.
If we find a spot, we report back here, and give everybody the hs.
Personally, I think that sounds a bit disorganized..
I think we should decide on a specific seed player.

I'm not quite sure if loose villas means several individual plots arranged 'at random' that make up a city or how Bottleneck operated in World 3 with a central city and private plots scattered around the supergrid (or so). I do like the latter, and in any case after we get settled I fully intend to move out and build my own private ranch.

I think our current plan is to set a hearth secret and either try to make it or go to it. I'm not sure if we're just picking the first random spawn we get or if we have some plan to do 'scouting' with alts beforehand or what.

I can think of a pretty dwarvenly first name we could use, that most people know, on DF. The U word. :)

Without knowing how many players will be joining us for sure, we can't come up with an organised system.

What I've always done, though, is just given out players blocks of land next to each other. One big palisaded area, with sub-palisaded areas for each player. A grid, basically, with a central road. Then, when more players come along and want to join, you just continue the grid, and extend the palisade.

On what can be built underground:

Quote from: jorb
It should now be possible to build essentially anything in both caves and mines. A couple of restrictions apply:
Caves: You can only build on paved ground. Tiles cannot be paved if there are (black) nil-tiles or water tiles anywhere within a 5x5 area around the tile you are trying to pave.
Mines: An area 6x6 tiles in size surrounds the mine ladder entrance. No constructions can be built on these tiles.

It's entirely possible there's some random something that can't be (like crossroads or an idol, knowing how these things go), though.

Source

Also I don't think the U word is all that much more secure than outright posting the hearth secret. That may sound a bit paranoid, but heck, the whole thing sounds paranoid to me (as long as we're sure to change the secret later). Alternately, we can use mass PMs (that's what I did for Andoran)

At the risk of sounding like I'm planning things, didn't Yolan's place (World's End???) use a 'donut' structure? Technically it'd be more of a square donut, but still. (What I'm talking about is the starting place was so large, then a wall, and when they ran out of room, added another wall, etc). That actually doesn't sound as easy/good to me as it might to some others, but maybe it's precedent anyway.

I don't think the U word is all that much more secure than outright posting the hearth secret.

Essentially, we can't palisade off a tunnel, then, if we can't build within 5 tiles of a black area.

I reckon we should stick to a good old above-ground location, find us a mine, and then in the future move into that mine, abandoning the town.

Edit;
As for the Hearth Secret, with you peoples' admission, I'll set up a Hearth Secret on an alt and PM it to those in this thread?

I have no problem with this, but I assume it will be jsut a base camp unless you expect to find a good location fast?

A world reset looks like a good time to buy back into H&H. I'll be sure to join in when you guys have found a nice location.

My two cents on the planning - In my experience, "communal" farm plots are less of a "whole village" activity, and more of a "two guys with high farming" activity, and it tends to burn those players out quickly. Man, I love them scare quotes.

Besides that, I'm sure that a good floor plan can be produced that will satisfy the community's needs.

I was thinking more along the lines of bringing everybody in, then "starring" outwards from the location, see what we find, then return and convene after X minutes.
